  • Jewel of the Month: Omi Privé’s Spessartite Ring

    JCK - Blogs (redirected)

Well, I'm certainly not surprised. Omi Privé's spessartite ring was a force the moment it made its debut, um, in my in-box. The fact that it garnered enough views on JCK Marketplace to be our Jewel of the Month is, quite honestly, expected. If I sound partial to this design, it's because I am. I'm drawn to its shocking color: The 12.05 ct. spessartite center stone is practically a magnet for the eye. I'm obsessed with its twisting band and dancing lines of rubies and yellow diamonds creating a...

NYC Wholesale Diamonds President Keith J. Saxe and his NYC Diamond Blog have featured many articles on the importance of having an accurate appraisal and insuring your engagement ring. This also holds true for all your valuable jewelry. It is not easy to establish a guideline for the value in which you should begin considering insuring fine jewelry. Every individual situation is unique, but a value of $4,000 for each piece can be accurate in most cases. Jim Donovan, Angie’s List 13-time Emmy Award-winning consumer reporter has written a wonderful article on this important topic. Here it…

The internet has become such a busy place. You can buy almost anything you can think of. Searching for lovely jewellery items that spark my face with a huge smile seems to be getting a little more difficult. Well, sometimes anyway. This month I have spent far too much of my personal time on Facebook, but I have come across some really interesting little jewellery start-up businesses. I was actually taken away with some of the great treats available from young designers making a stand in the world of jewellery. Facebook seems to be the perfect platform to engage friends, family and new…

    31 Jul 2015 | 9:07 am
Peridot, known for its vivid green hues, has long been associated with light. Its bright green shades also seem to be perfectly suited for the colors of the summer, making it well positioned for being the birthstone for the month of August. The gemstone also is long in history. Not only do early records indicate that the ancient Egyptians mined the green gem on an island now known as St. John’s Island, or Zabargad, in the Red Sea, but the stone also has been found in meteorites that have fallen to earth, though that type is extremely rare. Peridot is thought to protect its owners from…

I apologize for this blog being a little late. The exact halfway point of the year technically was about a month ago. But I was inspired to write this blog after spending the greater part of the week around so many retailers and other leaders in the industry and hearing what was on their minds. So, without further ado, I present to you three issues that will be worth monitoring for the rest of this year and beyond. 1) The diamond industry crisis. With this first one, I am not talking about over-graded diamonds (though that certainly still an issue; see below) but rather the giant morass the…

I got to be a shark this week. Well, not literally, but figuratively. Have you seen the ABC show Shark Tank? It’s where entrepreneurs present their ideas to a panel of “sharks”—a group of wildly successful and business-savvy businessmen and women, among them Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran and Kevin O’Leary, a/k/a Mr. Wonderful—and try to get one or more of the sharks to invest in their idea. Jeweler’s Resource Bureau President Cindy Edelstein borrowed from this concept recently to create “The Big Pitch,” where 12 new designers from the recently held JA New York Summer show…

I think that the line-up in this year’s New Designer Gallery at the JA New York Summer show was fantastic. Not only are these designers talented, up-and-coming women, but they are offering a lot of beautiful, interesting designs and, not to mention, a fair share of outstanding colored gemstones. It’s exciting to be able to see them get their footing in the trade show world and to see where they go from there. Here are five pieces that stood out to me from the new designers. These stunners from Unhada instantly caught my eye. The Leopold earrings, with lepidolite, purple sapphires, blue…

I just returned to New York City, and the National Jeweler office, after a sunny week off spent on the New England coast. I’m an avid fan of vacations, likely instilled in me by my family. From ski trips in Maine to beach houses on Rhode Island’s Block Island, we’ve always escaped for a few weeks out of the year to relax, unplug and spend time together. As I got older, I’ve incorporated trips with friends into my plans each year, and since the start of my career I’ve always used each and every vacation and personal day I was allotted. For me, there’s often a mix of emotion upon…

Since the launch of my Kickstarter Crowdfunding campaign I was constantly working hard to make sure I got fully funded. As I was totally putting myself out there, pushing myself to new boundaries, completely out of my comfort zone, I really didn’t want to fail. Many engagement surprises may have been ruined by the stricter security and men who have had to reveal their engagement ring to a surly security guard rather than the person they hoped to marry, ruining the surprise and possibly a future nuptial. Engagement rings will undoubtedly…

Cut to Orders, Cutting from Rough, and Re-cuts. Looking for a diamond but can’t find anything that meets your specs? Why not consider having a diamond cut to order? Whether you have an existing diamond that you would like re-cut or have a polished diamond that you would like to purchase for a re-cut, sometimes re-cutting a diamond is an excellent way to unlock its true value. If you can’t find a good re-cutting candidate, you might even want to consider having a diamond cut from rough. Cutting a diamond from rough or re-cutting a polished diamond inherently has risks so make sure to…

Victor Canera is a world-renowned custom jewelry maker and diamond designer. He also just happens to sell super-ideal diamonds with some of the best hearts and arrows patterning I have ever seen. Now you might be wondering, why buy a diamond from Victor Canera? Victor grew up around diamonds. He had a grandfather who was a jeweler and his father was also a jeweler who later became a diamantaire (someone who imports diamonds). He was also heavily influenced by his uncles who had jewelry manufacturing businesses. Victor began helping out in the family business since the age of 12 and then…

Melee Diamonds The term ‘melee’ in diamonds refers to stones that are smaller than 0.2cts (4mm) and are typically used in pavé jewelry. The melee diamonds used in micro-pavé jewelry are usually smaller than 0.01cts (1.4mm). Melee diamonds are typically sold within a color and clarity range (D-F/VVS or G-H/VS or-I-J/SI1). You can expect the price of melee diamonds in the D-F/VVS range to be 20-30% higher than the G-H/VS range, and the G-H/VS range to be 30-40% more expensive than in the I-J/SI1 range. Single-cut vs Full-cut A single-cut diamond only has 17 major facets (table, crown, and…
  • The Cushion Cut

    Vincent C.
    1 Jul 2015 | 2:55 am
A cushion cut diamond is loosely defined as a square with rounded corners. A cushion can either be an antique-cut or a modern-cut with one of the earliest antique-cuts being the Old Mine Cut (OMC) diamond that first appeared in Brazil during the 18th century. Like the round, princess, and oval cut diamonds that I have already written about, the cushion is a brilliant-cut diamond and you will find that this tutorial combines much of what you have learned from reading the other tutorials. Like an oval, the cushion is not constrained in its length to width (L/W) ratio. However, because the…

Graduation is just around the corner and if you’ve got someone special graduating this year, what better way to commemorate than to give a gift of diamonds. For a perfect graduation gift, I suggest getting a simple solitaire with a small diamond. I went to each of my affiliated vendors and picked out the ONE (1) diamond from each vendor that I think will make a perfect graduation gift for any budget. For the setting, I recommend a 14k white gold setting with 6-prongs that will make the diamond look bigger than it is. Diamonds don’t come much better than Whiteflash A Cut Above…

For women, having an intimate relation is more emotional than visual or physical. Men and women are very different in all aspects of life. Bedroom matters confirm the commonly used statement that men are from Mars and women from Venus, totally different planets. How men think about sex is not the same way women do, and this has been a source of so many bedroom fights for couples. For the…

Here it…

There’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in celebration of a July birthday. Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love. Ruby is a variety of the gems species corundum. It is harder than any natural gemstone except diamond, which means a ruby is durable enough for everyday wear. Fine-quality ruby is extremely rare, and the color of the gem is most important to its value. The most prized color is a medium or medium dark vivid red or slightly purplish red. The first information about the…

And what could make a hotel or restaurant look more lavish than a drink or suite package that comes with a real diamond? Even if the $10,000 martini with bling at the bottom doesn’t sell very well, it certainly generates press and adds splendor to a cocktail menu. What is the marketing advantage of these extravagant package deals? “People of extraordinary wealth want a story you can tell, or an experience you can share on social media,” says Allen Adamson, branding…

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but how much do you actually know about them? Beyond their blinding dazzle and swoon-worthy appeal, diamonds are more than just bling deep. For instance, did you know that a young diamond is about 900 million years old and an older diamond is around 3 billion years old? Or that there are more Picasso paintings in the world than there are colored diamonds? Mind blown. We learned those pearls of wisdom and more from Tiffany & Co.’s chief gemologist, Melvyn Kirtly. For over 30 years, Kirtly has worked with the luxury jewelry company and…

It’s important that you abstain from knocking/breaking/scratching the ring on a hard or harsh or rough surface if you want your gold plated jewelry in top condition. Remove the ring when you have to work with a hard surface or instruments. Evade direct contact with concoction/oil/high temperature items as this incorporates vast measure of sweat. Normal body oil is alright. Remove your ring when you go for exercise and so forth. The gold plated jewelry, ring or wrist trinket should just be put on after the cream or salve you have connected has been consumed by your skin or has dried.

The layer Thickness: The Gold plated jewelry sold on Jeweleen.com is plated with a thick layer of gold about 2 microns. We thicken the layer to make the plating last for much longer duration than the average plating quality available in the market. Rough exposure to the jewelry: Rough activities can affect the durability of the gold plated jewelry as they can cause really bad scratch lines cutting the under metal. The possibility of damage begins when you work on rough or abrasive surfaces. The routine work activities can also result in wear and tear as you may end up hitting the…

    Black Star Opal - News

  • The price is right for the Queen of Gems

    Olivia Deskoski
    9 Jul 2015 | 4:27 am
With luxury fashion houses falling in love with Australian opal again, demand for the Queen of Gems is surging and prices for top quality solid opal are on the rise. But how is an opal valued and why are some worth more than others? While most people have heard of the ‘4 Cs’ – cut, colour, clarity and carat weight – which determine how much you will pay for a diamond, when it comes to the question of opal it can be a little more complicated. That’s mainly because many more factors go into valuing opals than diamonds, and no two opals are alike. Even opal mining professionals don’t…

Vivid Sydney just loves opal, with the opal-inspired light art installation OPALessence (play.with.colour) a highlight of this 18 night festival, which lights up Sydney's harbour foreshore, The Rocks, inner-city and inner-west precincts. With 1.5 million people expected at Vivid Sydney this year, tens of thousands of people have already streamed past OPALessence (play.with.colour), taking in the 4-metre high bright and colourful opal gemstones and opal macro images projected onto a historic sandstone wall on the corner of 47 George and Playfair Streets in Sydney's Rocks area.  Three of…

  • The bad luck myth about opal

    Olivia Deskoski
    9 Mar 2015 | 11:52 pm
Some of us have heard it, and some of us even believe it, but is there any truth at all to the superstition that opals are bad luck?  Personally, we’ve never seen one single shred of evidence to support this belief so, getting straight to the point, a simple ‘No’ should suffice. Case closed. But for those of you who might not want to take our word for it (after all, we do love and sell opals), we’ve looked deeper into the bad luck myth; what we found surprised us and will surprise you too. Opal - the good luck stone? For thousands of years many of the world’s greatest cultures have…

You are the one who has to be comfortable wearing the opal for many years to come and it should reflect your own individual…

  • Looking For Hearts and Arrow Ideal Cut Diamond

    Liz Hancock
    30 Jul 2015 | 9:14 am
Q: Hi Liz, I’m looking for a diamond engagement ring for a solitaire setting: – around 1.1ct (if it’s closer to 1 carat, I’d probably rather spend less on a 0.9 carat, so I’m trying to jump up in size enough to validate the cost jump) – G, H, or I color – VS2 or eye clean SI1 My budget is around $7000-$8000 for the diamond. I’m looking for the best cut that I can get (preferably hearts and arrow ideal cut diamond). 20 Jul 2015 | 6:37 am
Q: Liz, I’ve been educating myself on diamonds, have been to several local shops and seen some up close in person, and I’m still finding it difficult to get an ideal 1.0-1.2ct cushion cut diamond in my price range of $5-$7k. Cut, as you mention, is the most important factor. I’m looking for a cushion with a lot of “brilliance” and “fire”. Beyond that, I’d like to be in the D-G range for color, and clarity to be eye-clean. Accurate ASET images would be ideal. I’ve been to Enchanted Diamonds, and wish that they had more ASETs available for…
  • What Makes A Diamond Sparkle? Understanding Scintillation

    Liz Hancock
    25 Jun 2015 | 7:53 am
Everyone knows that diamonds are the ‘go-to-gem’ for engagement rings and fine jewelry. They are the hardest natural material on earth which makes them particularly sought after for their durability and stability. Their hardness allows for them to be polished to a high adamantine luster which is extremely bright and reflective. But all of this doesn’t really tell us what we really want to know – exactly what makes a diamond sparkle? The sparkle of a diamond is known as a dynamic characteristic; meaning you must physically move the diamond in order to see how light…

  • At Least 50% More When Buying From A Store

    Liz Hancock
    22 Jun 2015 | 6:01 am
Q: Hi Liz, I need some advice. I have been looking for some diamond stud earrings for a couple months now. Sparkle is very important to me and I believe this comes from the ideal cut. Now a lot of jewelry consultants have tried to talk me out of the grade I want because they claim it’s far away people won’t notice. The thing is, I notice. I am looking for 1 ct total weight SI1 D-H/I in color with $6k budget. No lower than ‘I’. Now people have quoted me that it will be $5900 for a Forevermark. Is this a good deal? Then I went to Sidney Thomas and looked at Hearts On…

The sheer scale of the collection, the incredible quality of the rare coloured gemstones, and the fact that all 700 have been collected by a single hobbyist, is quite overwhelming. Within the collection, being sold through auctioneer John Pye, are more than 700…

Resource : blog.nationaljeweler.com/ By Brecken Branstrator | Peridot, known for its vivid green hues, has long been associated with light. Its bright green shades also seem to be perfectly suited for the colors of the summer, making it well positioned for being the birthstone for the month of August. The gemstone also is long in history. Not only do early records indicate that the ancient Egyptians mined the green gem on an island now known as St. John’s Island, or Zabargad, in the Red Sea, but the stone also has been found in meteorites that have fallen to earth, though that type is…

Resource : Wikipedia | Peridot (/ˈpɛrɨdoʊ/ or /ˈpɛrɨdɒt/) is gem-quality olivine. Olivine is a silicate mineral with formula of (Mg, Fe)2SiO4. As peridot is the magnesium-rich variety (forsterite) the formula approaches Mg2SiO4.   Geologically Olivine, of which peridot is a type, is a common mineral in mafic and ultramafic rocks, and it is often found in lavas and in peridotite xenoliths of the mantle, which lavas carry to the surface; but gem quality peridot only occurs in a fraction of these settings. Peridot can be also found in meteorites. Olivine in general is a very…
