  • Should jewelers hide price tags?

    25 Sep 2014 | 7:25 am
On Monday, NPR aired a story on why many jewelry stores choose to tuck away their price tags rather than display them. For me, the story highlighted two interesting points. Number one, many consumers remain, for reasons I have a hard time understanding because I know the industry so well, inherently distrustful of jewelers. Two, transparency is imperative in retailing today. For the story, NPR reporter Stacey Vanek Smith visited The Clay Pot in Brooklyn, N.Y. and interviewed store owner Tara Silberberg about why there aren’t price tags on any of the pieces in her store. NPR pointed out the…

  • The 11-year-old who’s wired for sales

    Michelle Graff
    13 Oct 2014 | 7:36 am
A few weeks ago, the prologue to the über-popular podcast This American Life featured the story of an 11-year-old girl from west Detroit named Asia Newson who owns her own company, SuperBusinessGirl, and is known as the city’s youngest entrepreneur. This young lady, the journalist who shadowed her for an afternoon tells us, seems inherently “wired” for sales, possessing a natural understanding that even many adults don’t have: When you are in sales, it’s about the person doing the selling, not what you are pedaling. (As a side note, the entire TAL episode is on salespeople, in one…

Last week another laboratory, EGL Platinum, issued a statement speaking out against the over-grading of diamonds while seeking to separate themselves from the EGL labs associated with this practice, a statement issued in the wake of the Rapaport Group’s move to quit listing diamonds graded by any EGL lab on RapNet. EGL Platinum is not the first EGL-branded lab to speak out on this issue; EGL USA and EGL South Africa (EGL SA) issued similar statements several weeks ago when the Rapaport Group first announced its decision. I see the labs’ point; over-grading by some shouldn’t overshadow…

A few weeks ago, National Jeweler wrote about A. Jaffe’s new “Maps” collection, which is raising the bar on the idea of personalized jewelry by offering pieces that can be customized to depict a certain spot on the globe where something significant happened to the wearer. I immediately was attracted to the product, and wanting to share it with our Facebook followers as well, posted it to our page that same day. To my surprise, a number of very supportive friends who have “liked” our page and follow our posts expressed the same feelings as me, unprompted, the next time I saw them. We…

    22 Sep 2014 | 6:54 am
In continuing with what I think unwittingly might have become another of my beats–weird and interesting jewelry (see: this gemstone cap)–I’ve got another discovery to share with you all. Industrial designer Naomi Kizhner has developed a line of jewelry called “Energy Addicts.” It was part of Kizhner’s graduation project at Jerusalem’s Hadassah College, reflecting what would happen in an energy crisis in the future and a solution that harnesses the human body, particularly the flow of blood through our veins, as a renewable source of energy. The jewelry is made of gold…

September is going to be an exciting month, especially if you are a fan of unique jewellery. There are so many, very talented Scottish designer jewellers working in Scotland but the lime light always seems to be in London. For years London has been home of  Jewellery Week and many of the largest jewellery shows are down there, such as Goldsmiths Fair, IJL (International Jewellery London). Unfortunately there are not any high profile jewellery fairs in Scotland so it’s hard for Scottish jewellers to showcase their work unless they exhibit in London. I have been thinking for years…

It has a long story where it got passed from one hand to the other and finally, as on today, it belongs to the British Royal family and is part of the Crown Jewels. Very few people know the fact that when it was discovered, Koh-I-Noor (mountain of light) was mined with its double, Dayra-E-Noor (sea of light). It is interesting to know that this diamond was 793 carats when uncut and was mined in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Its original name is said to be the Samantik Mani. In October, people all around are ‘going pink’ for Breast Cancer support and awareness. A pink ribbon (as well as just about anything pink!) has become the known sign for Breast Cancer Awareness. • Why Aren’t Diamonds Sold Like Wine?

    Greg K.
    9 Oct 2014 | 2:37 pm
If you’ve ever been to a wine tasting, you know that a lot of the fun is in the guessing game. Tasters are served a series of wines, or a flight, without first being told a country of origin, vineyard, or year for each wine. After the flight, the identity of each wine is revealed.   Diamond shopping is like that, sort of. Go to any jewelry shop and you’ll be able to see lots of different pieces of diamond jewelry. At first, for each diamond, the salesperson probably won’t volunteer where the diamond was mined. But there’s one big difference. Very likely, you’ll never find out…

The show’s theme has perfect timing as Emma Watson gave a great speech last week at the United Nations on gender equality — sparking a viral social campaign tagged #HeForShe. The mix of signs and psychedelic swirls brings back the imagery of the powerful women of the 1960s and 70s, and Lagerfeld wasn’t the only one feeling the hippie chic. 20 Oct 2014 | 1:34 pm
Oct 20 (CNBC) — Gold snapped two days of losses to rise on Monday as renewed weakness in European stocks boosted interest in the metal as an alternative asset, though a tentative recovery in risk appetite in other markets limited its gains. The metal rebounded sharply after falling to its lowest in over a year earlier this month, as jitters over growth prompted stock markets to sell off aggressively. A bounce in equities after upbeat housing and consumer sentiment data on Friday helped take the shine off that recovery, but gold’s subsequent move lower proved temporary. U.S. gold…

Have Some Fun This Year: Jewelry For Your Pumpkin Its that time of year again when we rush out last minute to get costumes in time to decorate the house and go to a friends for Halloween.  Children march through neighborhoods asking for candy dressed as the newest cartoon character of the year.  I suppose it may still be Elsa from Frozen this year.  Well this year its time to bling our pumpkin out with pumpkin jewelry.  One of the best parts of Halloween is getting the pumpkin ready.  We always have fun with the kids picking a pumpkin and then carving the pumpkin and lighting…

  • Your Bright Colored Jewelry Doesn't Have To Hibernate

    Elissa S.
    24 Sep 2014 | 7:35 pm
Don't Put Away Your Bright Colored Jewelry It's that sad time of year. The highs of summer are coming to an end. Kids are back in school and no more half day Fridays to head out of the office early and get your weekend started. Labor Day is over and summer for 2014 is now history. While this may mean for some the standard rules of no white jeans after labor day and various other fashion faux pas, does it really also apply to bright colored jewelry. Do I have to switch to my darker colored jewelry and give up my fun neon and bright colored jewelry? How can I still get my bright colored jewelry…

  • Properties of Lapis Lazuli

    15 Oct 2014 | 11:40 am
Mystical Lapis LazuliThe very name, Lapis Lazuli, leaves an exotic image in my mind. It makes me think of ancient times and other worlds that once existed. Part of the name comes from the Persian word, lāžaward. The Arabs called it lāzaward, and the many different European languages had their own take on the word from azure to lazur which Medival Latin got Lazulum from and today it's Lazuli. And Lapis is Latin for stone. So in essence, Lapis Lazuli is the azure stone from Lažaward, one of the mines the stone was found. Renaissance artists would ground up Lapis…
