This has been especially true with earrings, with a number of celebs donning studs, small drops or getting trendy with ear…

  • Retail words of the year

    Michelle Graff
    19 Nov 2014 | 7:37 am
On Tuesday, Oxford Dictionaries named its 2014 “Word of the Year,” the orderly amassing of letters that, according to the professional wordsmiths at Oxford, has “attracted a great deal of interest during the year to date.” Want to guess what it is? Were you thinking “selfie?” Please, that’s so 2013. Oxford crowned “vape” the word of the year in 2014. Vape can be used as a noun or a verb (but, then again, can’t almost anything these days?) and refers to an e-cigarette device (n.) or the physical act of breathing an e-cigarette’s vapor (v.). Word of the year runners-up…

One of the best parts of this job and this industry is hands down not only getting to see all the amazing jewelry but also getting to talk to the people–manufacturers, designers, retailers–behind it. This is especially true when these conversations take place in person and I get to hear, for example, the inspiration and idea behind a jewelry collection from the artist themselves. Last week I was lucky enough to meet with a designer who was new to me, Lisa Kim, and hear firsthand about her new collection, “Windlords.” With a feminine-yet-edgy look that I think will speak to the…

  • How much do retailers care about diamond industry discord?

    Michelle Graff
    6 Nov 2014 | 7:35 am
Last week, I had a fleeting thought that I should just ignore the latest diamond industry spat–a survey that led a group of eight organizations to skip the World Diamond Council meeting altogether. I was fresh off Martin Rapaport’s Monday night speech in New York, and his message seemed perfectly timed in light of the latest industry drama: the United States remains the world’s No. 1 market for diamond jewelry. The primary concern of retailers here should be driving future diamond demand, particularly among Millennials. Initially, I tacked on a paragraph to my blog last week…

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    9 Nov 2014 | 12:27 pm
Apatite BraceletI have been spending some time in Hot Springs, Arkansas lately where my best friend and most of my family live. That means that I am woefully behind on so many things and  I am struggling to catch up.  From the Fall Collection, now long overdue to be shown, are these bracelets that look great alone or stacked together on the wrist.  Above is a bracelet with sterling silver, apatite and a single lotus charm; below,  a similar bracelet with gem-quality faceted coin amethysts, sterling silver, and a fleur de lis charm.  The bracelet has a lobster…

I saw with dismay this morning that at 6:00 a.m. it was still dark.  Yes, summer is over, and where did it go so quickly?! Fall is almost here and with it will come the new Cluny Grey Fall Collection. Meanwhile, here are a few pieces I've finished lately.Above, a fluorite bracelet with a dichroic focal bead echoing the colors in the green and purple fluorite.  This bracelet is made with some of my favorite faceted fluorite nuggets in beautiful shades including a blue fluorite.Below, a sunstone bracelet with flashing sunstone and a 14 karat gold-filled large-linked textured…

    3 Aug 2014 | 3:29 pm
Peridot, the August birthstone, is a pretty gemstone with a clear green color. It is fairly easy usually for us to find translucent peridot that are especially pretty for the jewelry that I make. I do like working with it; the only drawback to peridot is that it is usually difficult to find very large stones.    Peridot has a rich history, full of legends and lore that makes it an especially interesting gemstone. The Egyptians called peridot the "gem of the sun" and believed that it was best mined at night when it shone brightly; during the day, it shone so brightly that it…

I adore coral; it's an organic material straight from the sea with all the magic of the sea. Coral combines well with pearls and other gemstones, and of course, it looks wonderful with artist's lampwork beads. I'm especially fond of peachy-pink colored coral of any kind, and I am bewitched by  branch coral with long twiggy-looking sprigs.Above, a coral bracelet with peachy-pink coral nuggets mixed with irregularly shaped freshwater pearls and sterling silver.  The sea-themed charms include a mermaid, a seahorse, and a fish. Above and below, coral bracelets with slices of…

I've been busy working on rubies when I haven't been visiting my mother and my best friend in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  I do love working with rubies! Rubies are the July birthstone, of course, and how appropriate since it is the red-hot month of summer. Rubies, like Fourth of July fireworks are compelling; one has to look at them.    Rubies look good on everyone whether your complexion is dark or light, your haircolour brown, red, grey, blonde, or black (yes, rubies look soooo good on redheads!), whether you are big or small-boned, short or tall.       September is going to be an exciting month, especially if you are a fan of unique jewellery. Unfortunately there are not any high profile jewellery fairs in Scotland so it’s hard for Scottish jewellers to showcase their work unless they exhibit in London. I have been thinking for years…

A record breaking online sales was witnessed in the last year holiday season. Every newspaper and magazine talked about the revenue that the e-commerce had mustered on the occasions of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This was indeed a win-win situation for the online retailers and the shoppers, especially on the day of Black Friday. It is rightly said that nothing interesting is ever completely one-sided. In a similar way, no matter how exciting the occurrence of Black Friday is, its negatives come as a surprise to you when you face a dreadful situation sometimes (wish this to never happen).

I have been fascinated by macrame since childhood.  Of course back then, when dinosaurs ruled the earth, think and colorful cords were hard to come by.  I think everything I made used that terrible brown shreddy rope that ripped your hands apart while you worked. Then came beautiful C-Lon and other brands of nylon cord.  All the colors of the rainbow, and no shreds!  As you can…

When the certification system that is supposed to stop blood diamonds put a ban on gems from the Central African Republic last year, everyone in the diamond industry knew that the ban had little chance of working. Previous bans on blood diamonds from countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Zimbabwe didn’t stop diamond smugglers.   So it didn’t come as much of a surprise last week when the United Nations (UN) reported that blood diamonds from the Central African Republic are filtering into the global diamond supply.  According to a UN panel of experts, at least 140,000 carats worth of…

In the fashion world they say that trends get recycled every twenty years (witness today’s resurgence of 1990’s styles). While fine jewelry is less trend-driven than clothing, it’s certainly true that what’s old feels new again today, as a new generation of jewelry lovers discovers the beauty of vintage and vintage-inspired designs. Here are five styles of jewelry that were popular during past eras but suddenly feel as fresh today as they did decades ago:   Colored Gemstone Engagement Rings Engagement rings featuring prominent center diamonds weren’t the norm until the…
  • Ghost Miners Haunt Mines in South Africa

    Greg K.
    30 Oct 2014 | 7:37 pm
Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, there is proof of something close: what South Africans call “ghost miners.” These men and women, who are real flesh and blood, haunt the gold mines of South Africa. Because they often remain underground for weeks or months at a time, the ghost miners look like ghosts too. Lack of sunlight turns their skin a ghostly gray.   Who are the ghost miners? As Matthew Hart describes in his 2013 book titled Gold: The Race for the World’s Most Seductive Metal, the ghost miners are illegal gold miners. Many of South Africa’s gold mines are so large and…

  • Paris Fashion Week Brings Back Hippie Chic

    Loren Wilkes
    30 Sep 2014 | 1:07 pm
Karl Lagerfeld made headlines yesterday with his “Girl Power” influenced Chanel show, where models finished the runway toting feminist picket signs. The show’s theme has perfect timing as Emma Watson gave a great speech last week at the United Nations on gender equality — sparking a viral social campaign tagged #HeForShe. The mix of signs and psychedelic swirls brings back the imagery of the powerful women of the 1960s and 70s, and Lagerfeld wasn’t the only one feeling the hippie chic. Elie Saab and Saint Laurent also worked the rainbow patterns into their…

Surface and internal graining are characteristics of diamond that very few people actually have a good idea of what it’s all about. The first thing you need to know about graining is that it is natural and it occurs because of defects in the crystal structure of diamond. In the contemporary market, citrine’s most popular shade is an earthy, deep, brownish or reddish orange. People have used quartz in jewelry for thousands of years. CertifiedJewelry
    3 Nov 2014 | 6:50 am

However, plain wedding bands can still be worn by employees, but we’re sure nobody is going to look at this little piece of ‘silver lining’. How much to spend on an engagement ring is…
