A few weeks ago, the prologue to the über-popular podcast This American Life featured the story of an 11-year-old girl from west Detroit named Asia Newson who owns her own company, SuperBusinessGirl, and is known as the city’s youngest entrepreneur. This young lady, the journalist who shadowed her for an afternoon tells us, seems inherently “wired” for sales, possessing a natural understanding that even many adults don’t have: When you are in sales, it’s about the person doing the selling, not what you are pedaling. (As a side note, the entire TAL episode is on salespeople, in one…

EGL Platinum is not the first EGL-branded lab to speak out on this issue; EGL USA and EGL South Africa (EGL SA) issued similar statements several weeks ago when the Rapaport Group first announced its decision. On Monday, NPR aired a story on why many jewelry stores choose to tuck away their price tags rather than display them. For me, the story highlighted two interesting points. Number one, many consumers remain, for reasons I have a hard time understanding because I know the industry so well, inherently distrustful of jewelers. Two, transparency is imperative in retailing today. For the story, NPR reporter Stacey Vanek Smith visited The Clay Pot in Brooklyn, N.Y. and interviewed store owner Tara Silberberg about why there aren’t price tags on any of the pieces in her store. NPR pointed out the…

That quasi-futuristic yet refined signature style belonging to Alexis Bittar has been a hit for years, particularly among fine-jewelry fans since he debuted karat gold and precious stone offerings in 2013. Unfortunately there are not any high profile jewellery fairs in Scotland so it’s hard for Scottish jewellers to showcase their work unless they exhibit in London. I have been thinking for years…

  • The Opals of October

    Joseph Schubach
    28 Oct 2014 | 6:35 am
Even though October is nearing an end, we wanted to take a moment to focus on one the most magical gems: opals. The name opal is derived from the Sanskrit word “upala,” as well as the Latin “opalus,” meaning “precious stone.” Opal is a gemstone of much variety; the ancient Roman natural historian Pliny once described it in the following way: “… it is made up of the glories of the most precious stones. To describe it is a matter of inexpressive difficulty: There is in it the gentler fire of the ruby, the brilliant purple of the amethyst, the sea-green of the emerald, all…

Some of us assume that those of the royal ilk are almost obligated to constantly wear something new every time they appear in public. But just like us, they have their favorite pieces. Princess Kate particularly loves her pearl drop earrings…and the designer is all too happy about her smart choice. “Kate looked radiant, elegant and eternally stylish,” jeweler Annoushka Ducas tells PEOPLE, adding: “the pearls are very easy to wear and they look great on her.” Kate has been photographed in the 18ct yellow, gold and white pearl drops [£295] so many times, Ducas has lost count and…

  • Jewelry Industry Should Invest in Diamond Diggers, DDI Leader Says

    Greg K.
    21 Oct 2014 | 1:39 am
There are about a million artisanal diamond diggers in Africa who live in extreme poverty. For the last century they’ve been mostly forgotten, left to toil in dangerous pits while barely earning enough to eat. But now a group based in Ottawa is leading an initiative to change that—to raise labor and environmental standards and give diamond diggers a fair deal. It’s called the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI), and it’s one of the groups that we support at Brilliant Earth through our non-profit fund. I recently had the privilege to talk with Dorothée Gizenga, DDI’s Executive…

  • Why Aren’t Diamonds Sold Like Wine?

    Greg K.
    9 Oct 2014 | 2:37 pm
If you’ve ever been to a wine tasting, you know that a lot of the fun is in the guessing game. Tasters are served a series of wines, or a flight, without first being told a country of origin, vineyard, or year for each wine. After the flight, the identity of each wine is revealed.   Diamond shopping is like that, sort of. Go to any jewelry shop and you’ll be able to see lots of different pieces of diamond jewelry. At first, for each diamond, the salesperson probably won’t volunteer where the diamond was mined. But there’s one big difference. Very likely, you’ll never find out…

(American Hard Assets) – In 2008, “selling gold” parties became a feature in the Middle American landscape. At the onset of the Great Recession, parties of women got together to pool their gold items and sell them to chosen buyers, invited specifically to buy the women’s gold in bulk. When the recession hit, people were out with their gold jewelry and watches, a street level influence that helped hike up gold price into record levels.
