History Of Earrings – In the same way as it is natural enough to hang a chain round the neck, it is in a smaller way natural to hang something over the ears. Even now, children can often be seen playing with cherries and hanging stalked pairs over their ears. Most savages appreciated the value of their ears as easy to ornament, and even to-day Indian ayahs can often be seen with rows of little jeweled studs set along the upper curve of the ear, and the lobe of the ear has been for ages a happy hunting ground for the decorative artist of primitive society. The extent to which the lobe…

The Origin of Gems Origin Of The Precious Stones – When and how were the gems deposited? and has Nature ceased to reproduce them? is often asked by the inquiring mind. This is a question not so easily answered as it may seem at first sight; and there are many facts known to the mineralogist which incline the observer to, believe that Nature (or rather her forces in this respect) is not yet exhausted. There is a widespread belief among the numerous and far-separated diamond-seekers among the gem mines of India, that the diamond is being constantly reproduced; and this idea, though…

At Jessica Simpson’s wedding to Eric Johnson earlier this month the bride wore gold—a dazzling golden lace and tulle Carolina Herrera gown, perhaps chosen to perfectly complement her vintage ruby and yellow gold engagement ring.   The singer/actor/fashion mogul’s engagement ring is a Tiffany & Co design from 1910, and features a round ruby and two pear shaped diamonds on a yellow gold band. According to People StyleWatch, Jessica and her new husband had their wedding bands custom designed  to coordinate harmoniously with her engagement ring.  Jessica’s wedding band is…

It was fitting that Monday’s story about the retirement of Tiffany & Co. CEO Mike Kowalski ran directly ahead of my latest piece about the Pebble Mine in Alaska, the proposed open-pit copper and gold mine that would sit at the headwaters of the pristine eco-system that surrounds beautiful Bristol Bay. Tiffany, after all, was among those that led the charge to get jewelers to vow to boycott gold from the mine back in 2009. At the center of that charge was Kowalski, who personally visited Bristol Bay for fly-fishing and, when he returned to New York, showed Tiffany’s board of directors…

I took a little trip to London on Wednesday night, without even leaving New York City. On the edge of the West Village on Christopher Street sits Flat 128, a luxury lifestyle store that “brings the U.K. to N.Y.C.” and offers everything from jewelry to antiques to one-of-a-kind clothing. Among the jewelry carried is pieces by Sarah Angold, a London-based designer who creates geometric earrings, bracelets and necklaces made with laser-cut acrylic, 3-D printed materials including plastic and brass, and other materials like sterling silver and wood.   A table full of Sarah Angold jewelry;…

    14 Jul 2014 | 8:03 am
I received quite a bit of response from last week’s post concerning consumers’ thoughts on lab-grown diamonds, from both the trade and the people I polled. My article even sparked a more formal poll, on consumer-facing jewelry website PriceScope. One question that came up both during and after the polling that I failed to address in my initial story is price. Many of the people I questioned said that the lower cost is the main reason, or one of the main reasons, they would choose a lab-grown diamond over a mined stone. Here’s a response from one survey-taker, who apparently is not very…

It’s been a rough (no diamond pun intended) past couple of weeks for two of the industry’s largest producers of lab-grown diamonds. The board of Scio (formerly Boston-based Apollo) in Greenville, S.C. got what they wanted, forcing out interim CEO Gerald McGuire just a week after he took office, along with board members Edward Adams, Robert Linares (who is Adams’ father-in-law and the founder of Apollo), and Theodorus Strous. Scio shareholders had been advocating for change for months, pointing out that the company isn’t making any money. Gemesis also announced major changes, hiring…

The work of gemstone miners and traders and how they extract minerals from the source seems to be a popular theme for documentaries these days. After taking a look at the Sharing the Rough project earlier this year, which follows the story of one gemstone from mine to market, I recently found out about another cool film along the same lines that just was released. Filmmaker and director Philippe Brunot created Follow the Zebra, which focuses on the lives behind the scenes of gemstone mining and trading in Tanzania, following the miners who spend their lives uncovering rare stones in remote…

I adore coral; it's an organic material straight from the sea with all the magic of the sea. Coral combines well with pearls and other gemstones, and of course, it looks wonderful with artist's lampwork beads. I'm especially fond of peachy-pink colored coral of any kind, and I am bewitched by  branch coral with long twiggy-looking sprigs.Above, a coral bracelet with peachy-pink coral nuggets mixed with irregularly shaped freshwater pearls and sterling silver.  The sea-themed charms include a mermaid, a seahorse, and a fish. Above and below, coral bracelets with slices of…

I've been busy working on rubies when I haven't been visiting my mother and my best friend in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  I do love working with rubies! Rubies are the July birthstone, of course, and how appropriate since it is the red-hot month of summer. Rubies, like Fourth of July fireworks are compelling; one has to look at them.    Rubies look good on everyone whether your complexion is dark or light, your haircolour brown, red, grey, blonde, or black (yes, rubies look soooo good on redheads!), whether you are big or small-boned, short or tall. Rubies are…

It's almost official SUMMER, and summer is the time for ankle bracelets.  Nothing shows off summer skin like a gemstone ankle bracelet; nothing looks sexier on your legs except bare skin! Very feminine, but slightly edgy, ankle bracelets have long been the summer jewelry of choice.   Above, a sterling silver ankle bracelet made with amazonite and genuine abalone; perfect for your beach vacation! The shell abalone hangs next to the tiny sterling toggle clasp.   Below, a red-hot carnelian ankle bracelet cooled off with just a touch of aqua apatite and a single sterling…
  • I Love Turquoise for Summer!

Turquoise Bracelet with Sterling Silver Turquoise is probably my favorite color, so it follows that I would certainly love gem turquoise.  For years, I thought of turquoise as Southwestern and it reminded me of family trips to California, and conjured images of the Painted Desert, Carlsbad Caverns, Navajo reservations, and that endless highway called Route 66 that we drove on back then.   Then, I went to Greece! To my surprise, turquoise was everywhere, as it was when I went to Egypt, and especially when I went to Turkey. Although I still can link turquoise with the…

Citrine Necklace with Sterling SilverEverything goes in cycles, and making jewelry is no exception. What seems exciting and absorbing for months will suddenly become old, and I'll search for new gemstones everywhere, even though I have an unbelievably large inventory in the studio.  Then, there are times when I go back to the gemstones that first piqued my interest when I began making jewelry so many years ago.  Precious gemstones are perennials with me, but here are some of the other gemstones in jewelry form that I have long had a romance with.Above, citrines are one of my…

Gone are the days when just the expensive gemstones and the diamonds were the first choice of the people when it comes to the engagement rings. These days the charm of wearing not-so-expensive engagement rings is high. This way, people try to save a lot of money which can be used in other important works. There are a lot of options available in the jewelry market which can be beautiful alternates to these expensive stones. Some of them are as under- 1) Garnet for Ruby 2) Peridot for Emerald 3) Tanzanite for Sapphire 4) Moissanite for Diamond The most interesting concept is that all these gems…

Organic gemstones have their own beauty and charm. They are a wonderful result of harmony between living and non-living beings. Amber, which was once famously known as the gold of the north is one of the organic beauties that we have cherished for decades. Amber is the fossilized resin of pine trees that went extinct 50 million years back. It has resinous luster with transparent to virtually opaque appearance. The stones’ outer surface is crusty and weathered. But it is warm and silky from the inside and often contains lichens, insects and remains of wood. Amber until the 19th century was…

I want to make a non-wearable piece, just a pretty bead and embroidery picture, and I'm having trouble deciding which fabric should be the background.  I started out with a whole bunch of fabrics and narrowed down over a few hours. The two contenders are both pieces of muslin that I free-style marbled years and years ago.  As you can see, the one above is subtle and doesn't interfere with the focal pieces.BUT, the other has more of the colors of the flowers in it, and seems to be a slightly better match, although it is a busier pattern.  Which would you choose?Technorati Tags:…
