The past few years have marked a love-hate relationship between jewelers and precious metals. On one hand, nearly everyone profited from rising prices by buying from the public, a lucrative practice that helped keep many afloat during the darkest days. Conversely, high metals prices can make the actual practice of retailing fine jewelry a significant challenge. The definition of fine jewelry is a simple one: jewelry constituted of precious components. And those are few. In metals, it's gold, platinum and--increasingly recently--silver. In stones, it's diamonds, rubies, sapphires,…

I love Spring colours! Color blocking is a really big trend in fashion this Spring and I've "color-blocked" as well in some of my bracelets.  I am especially fond of the deep pastel colors found in chalcedony and so I've used it in this group.  Above and below, deep aqua chalcedony and pink chalcedony feature in this handmade bracelet with color-blocking. It's lacy and feminine with the sterling silver filigree toggle and charm.  The aqua chalcedony is faceted and sparkly while the pink is smooth and polished. Above and below, the look of shining sterling mingles with aqua…

Last week was Madison Avenue Watch Week here in New York, a seven-day stretch dedicated to showcasing and recognizing the work of watchmakers and the high-end timepiece brands that line Madison Avenue. As part of the week’s festivities, I took part in a mechanical watch-making workshop at the Peninsula Hotel, organized by the Swiss watch industry’s Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH). I must admit I had my doubts before heading into the class. I don’t have an exceptionally steady hand, probably due to the three cups of black tea I consume throughout the day. Also, as has been…

A recent Associated Press article ignited debate over employers asking for potential employees’ social media passwords, the combination of letters and numbers that open the door to the presumably personal worlds of accounts on sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The report set off a flurry of privacy-minded legislative action since first appearing in March. In April, Maryland became the first state to pass a law banning employers from asking for social media passwords; the bill is awaiting the governor’s signature. Legislation also is being considered in a number of other states,…

Lots of talk cropping up again about the "Swiss-made" label. As most in our business are aware, there are set criteria for determining what level of “Swiss” labeling manufacturers can claim for their watches. Like other magazines, we publish and discuss those on a fairly regular basis, especially at the beginning of the year, around the time the BaselWorld timepiece lollapalooza heats up. These rules are taking on a greater significance now, however, since 1. Bienne-based Swatch Group--umbrella manufacturer of nearly two dozen brands--decided to begin decreasing its supply of…

Everyone loves a timeless piece of jewelry, but the price tag that comes along with it can be jarring. Even if you don’t have the budget for a large diamond, however, you can still afford a beautiful statement piece or an accessory that holds up through everyday use. Here is how to find the piece that sparkles just as much as you do. Think outside of big name retailers. That little blue box from Tiffany & Co. has come to symbolise the very best in exclusive jewelry, but if you choose to shop here, you may be shelling out up to 80 percent more for the name alone. If you want to…
  • The Best Place to Purchase Colored Diamonds

    admin
    5 Sep 2011 | 12:07 pm
Although most diamonds are colorless, some of the most prized diamonds are actually colored or “fancy”.  The famous Hope Diamond is a deep hue of blue, and another beautiful large diamond is the Tiffany Yellow Diamond.  Celebrities in recent times have also sported colored diamond rings.  One of the most coveted  is the pink diamond engagement ring given to Jennifer Lopez. Recently I found a site where you can purchase natural colored diamonds for your jewelry.  Here is a quick review. The website is www.fancydiamonds.net and it is operated by  Leibish & Co.  You can…

    6 May 2012 | 4:12 pm
It's already May, one of my favorite months, for reasons other than my own May birthday.  I love this time of year when the weather changes, my wardrobe changes, and my outlook changes.  I feel the urge to walk, an inclination to dress up, and an overall sense of well-being. Does anyone else feel this May mood? It could still be because for many years that I taught, May signaled the coming of summer vacation.  The emerald is the May birthstone (I am so lucky!) and of course, emerald jewelry is classic and luxurious even when it is made with the roughly faceted nuggets…
  • The Colors of Spring in Chalcedony and Aquamarine!

    Cluny Grey
    19 Apr 2012 | 6:13 pm

I've been using Swarovski crystals lately.  For some reason, I will go for a long period and hardly use Swarovski crystals at all; then, suddenly, I want them for every bracelet.  You can see my obsession with them especially expressing itself in the Swarovski bracelet above.  It is a charm bracelet made only with Swarvoski charms of rounds and bicones in fairly bright colours with a few pastels thrown in.  It is gratifyingly full and sparkles like the dickens!  I attached the crystals in groups of three so that the bracelet would be especially lush - and it is!

It is now officially Spring, and I am loving it! Thank goodness I live in a place with four seasons, since the change into each one seems to rejuvenate me.  Spring here in Washington is beautiful; the cherry blossoms are everywhere and they are truly beautiful (I'll have some cherry blossom bracelets up soon).  Our daffodils started blooming about three weeks ago.  I don't know about you, but I'm sleeping with the windows cracked so the cool night air can come in (forget the pollen count!) and I've been cleaning everything in the house. I have found some time to make some new…

All of the old programs from the old computer have to be tranferred, usually reset in some way (all my pictures are getting filed under Documents for some reason)and I have to figure out the new keyboard. I've been working with abalone;I love its iridescence, its wonderful gleam, and the way that it works with so many gemstones. Above, the abalone bracelet with two strands features only abalone and sterling…

  • Daily Fail: Shaming Stella McCartney For Looking Old Without Makeup

    Briana Rognlin
    15 May 2012 | 4:27 pm
The Daily Mail is among the media outlets most obsessed with the no-makeup “trend”—headlines proclaiming shock over a new barefaced celebrity seem to surface on their website hourly—but unsurprisingly, they’ve also been using it as an opportunity to shamelessly bash female celebrities’ looks; especially the ones who happen to be older than 23. First, there was their embarrassing focus on Hilary Clinton‘s pared-down look (while discussing nuclear weapons); now, they’re bashing Stella McCartneyfor looking “older than her years” without makeup.
  • Tyra Banks Likes Vogue‘s New Rules (But Likes Her Own Advice More)

    15 May 2012 | 2:38 pm
Well, that settles it. Those of us who were skeptical about Vogue‘s vague new “rules” for becoming “ambassadors of positive body image” can now rest assured that positive change is coming, because Tyra Banks said so. In an open letter today, the model-turned-entrepreneur-turned-talk-show-host congratulated the fashion/media giant on their decision…and offered plenty of Tyra-centric advice of her own. Because, you know, she’s Tyra. And while much of it was questionable, she did have some pretty smart things to say. Banks, who has made a career out of…
  • TMZ Ignites Cruel Shaming Of Bryce Dallas Howard’s Post-Baby Body

    Deborah Dunham
    15 May 2012 | 10:54 am
Some people are just assholes. I don’t really know any other way of putting it after reading the unbelievably cruel fat-shaming comments that people left on TMZ after they showed post-pregnancy photos of actress Bryce Dallas Howard. The Help star “was spotted exercising her post-pregnancy legs on a walk with her adorable baby daughter Beatrice in L.A. this weekend,” TMZ wrote. They went on to point out her “comfy sweats and slippers” and even subtitled the article, “It Takes a Village.” A village of what? Fat? Did they deliberately leave that wide…
  • From “Scary Skinny” To “Full-Figured”: 5 Celebs Who Have Been Snarked For Both

    Hanna Brooks Olsen
    15 May 2012 | 9:00 am
Some celebrities are consistently being bashed for the same thing–Rachel Zoe is always “scary skinny,” like at last week’s Met Gala, for example–and that is upsetting. However, it’s not quite as disappointing as the body-snarking that happens to celebs who, like a lot of us, aren’t one body type or another. These women, whose weight fluctuates depending on, say, the role they’re playing, the workout they’re into, or what’s happening in their life, can’t ever seem to get it right. This does not send a great message to the…
  • Vogue’s Olympic Issue: Celebrating Male Athletes and Female…Models

    Briana Rognlin
    14 May 2012 | 3:35 pm
Vogue‘s June issue is a special Olympic-themed issue, devoted to celebrating the athletes with shoots like Annie Leibowitz‘s “Country Strong” and Bruce Weber‘s “Wonder Women.” But from the cover–which features Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte flanked by Hope Solo and Serena Williams—to the shoots, it’s hard not to notice how strongly the issue glorifies male athletes…and female models. Not only are the female athletes given far less ink (each male athlete gets two photos, while the female athletes each get one), but the photos chosen…

I found a beautiful bone china cup and saucer from England that I thought would make lovely wedding jewelry. The china is called "Silver Lace Queen Anne" and the cup says "Wedding Anniversary" inside. The china is white with a very shiny silver design. I would think it must have been for a silver wedding anniversary. Perfect for the bride and groom just starting off their marriage with the hopes of a future silver wedding anniversary together! And a perfect gift to give to the members of the wedding party. The wedding set includes the bride's pendant, three bridesmaids' pendants, the groom's…

Here's a very short video of Jeremy in his new cart at the beach. This cart was donated by volunteers at Rescue Ridge, the rescue who saved Jeremy 2-1/2 years ago. They have been wonderfully supportive through Jeremy's illness and I'm so grateful to them for giving Jeremy this chance to have this type of mobility once again. He adjusted so quickly to his cart - was running down the street the second day! It just supports his hips to the right level so that his legs can move and he can practice placing his feet properly. He doesn't drag his feet as badly in this cart, though when we walk down…

    Greg Valerio
    7 May 2012 | 7:39 am
By Aurelie Sinclair Blood diamonds – also called conflict diamonds – were once kept almost completely out of the US diamond market by the Kimberley Process. However, with the Process’ recent failings, more and more are finding their way into the mainstream supply of gemstones. The Kimberley Process is voluntary and self-regulating. It monitors the diamond industry by placing labels on diamond shipments, certifying that these diamonds are conflict-free. This is meant to guarantee buyers that the diamonds they are getting are not financing human rights violations. Unfortunately, there has…

What’s more, according to Ethical Metalsmiths, although metal mining only employs 0.9 per cent of the global workforce, it consumes 10 per cent of the world’s energy. ‘Mining is the most environmentally damaging industry in the world, and jewellery is 100 per cent dependent on mined…

We all know that even after his death in 1996, Tupac Shakur has created ripples in the pop circuit. We all are referring to it as a hologram but technically according to Ed Ulbrich of Digital Domain Media Group Inc it is a 2-Dimentional image and not a hologram, which is 3-Dimentional. There are so many tales of dead coming to life, if you are sacred of these stories try some Ruby jewelry as it protects as well as…

  • TAST week 20 - bullion knot

    Cyndi L
    15 May 2012 | 12:01 pm
This week for Take a Stitch Tuesday we visited with a beautiful stitch, the bullion knot!  The usual thing with bullion knot is to use it to form flowers or flower buds, so I decided that I'd make a starfish to go along with the underwater theme of my manipulated fabric quilt.  So why does it look like a flower, you ask?   Because the best laid plans of needle and thread... It looks like a flower because it is one.  Despite my resolve to be creative, I fell prey to the floral charms of this stitch.  I also didn't do a very good job keeping the wrappings…

Measure your finished crocheted piece and determine how long you want your straps to be.  Cut two pieces of beading wire, each about 4 inches longer than the intended finished length.  I made each of my straps about 3 inches long.  2. Slip a crimp tube and a glass bead or two over one end of the first piece of beading wire.  Pass the end through one of the wrapped loops and back through the beads and the crimp.  Tighten and flatten the…

Peggy Li Creations I have been a jewelry designer for over 10 years. I started making jewelry for myself and people would stop me on the street and ask where I got the pieces. Soon I decided that I'd like to sell my pieces, mainly so I could keep buying new beads! I've also had my pieces in magazines like Oprah and Lucky Magazines. It's been a great ride designing and creating jewelry pieces that I love, in a medium that I love, beads and wire. This example of an exquisite Fabergé Egg, made for Nicholas II of Russia in 1901, stands just 12cm tall and is adorned with seed pearls. The famous French jeweller to the Russian Tsars crafted his jewelled masterpieces with precious metals, enamel, gemstones and delicate pearls. The use of seed pearls in jewellery throughout the latter part of the 19th century was immensely popular, with elaborate decorative brooches, tiaras, pins and earrings being very representative of Victorian fashion at the time. Prestigious jewellers such as Tiffany, Cartier and Boucheron studded their designs with…

One of the most beautiful and unique qualities of a pearl is its colour. The popular image of a cultured pearl is that it should be pure and white, but there are many more types of pearls with natural, and quite unnatural colours. What determines a pearl’s colour, how is pearl colour graded by an expert and what should you look for when buying pearls? WHAT CAUSES A PEARL’S COLOUR? The physical colour of a pearl is influenced by a number of factors. The colour of the host mollusc’s  shell, and the genetic fingerprint of its tissue and epithelial cells, gives the greatest…

The Austrian painter is best known for his sensual paintings and sketches of the female form, often adorned with gold leaf and inspired by the inlays and detail of jewellery. His three beautiful friezes for the Palais Stoclet, the private mansion of a Belgian industrialist, incorporated enamel, coral, semi-precious stones and even pearls. In recent years, works by Klimt have become highly sought after, and copied, with his portrait titled Adele Bloch-Bauer I setting a new record at auction in 2006 for a reported $135m.

Look closely at this image of these beautiful baroque Tahitian pearls and it is possible to see several small blemishes and imperfections on the surface of the pearl. Although fake pearls are typically very smooth and artificially perfect, a real pearl may often have irregularities such as pits, chips, bumps and scratches on its surface. Both natural and cultured pearls are formed by a mussel or oyster over months and even years. Because of this slow process, it is rare for the surface of a pearl to be perfectly flawless and instead it can be quite normal for pearls to have blemishes on…

Today’s recommended diamond is going to be the best Round diamond for less than a $8,000 budget. The choice is actually not fair, considering the budget. I chose a diamond worth much less than $8,000 for this selection, but it is a great diamond in the $7000 to $8000 range, even though it is closer to the $7000 end. It could very well be that at the end of the range closer to $8k there might be great diamonds, but I like this one as a great buy. The diamond is this 1.10 carat Round diamond, with I color and VS2 clarity. The diamond is a Very Good cut Round diamond, and it sells for…

The Colors of Gold Gold is not just yellow, it actually comes in many different colors.  For engagement rings the most common options are either white, yellow or pink gold bands.  So where do the different colors of gold…

The Real Thing The allure of the diamond is unquestionable, its charm compels and its beauty entices.  The source of the attraction is definitely down the fire and sparkle that reflects off its surface.  The multi colored flashes of light are just absolutely fascinating.  But, can you be sure that any diamond you purchase will be stunning.  The GIA is here to help. Elana
    18 Apr 2012 | 3:46 am
Transforming a Diamond The breathtaking allure that emanates from a diamond is all down to the diamond cut.  Form the diamond facets precisely and you’ll end up with a dazzling gem stone, make an error of even 1mm and you could end up with an empty and lifeless stone.  It takes experience to learn how to cut a diamond in the optimal way; definitely not a task anybody can be trusted with. Rough Diamonds Not everyone who comes across a rough diamond in the earth’s surface would recognize its importance.  The diamond’s beauty is hidden, which just goes to show how you should never judge…

  • Design and Make a Sterling Silver Ring – fabulous rings by weekend students at Flux

    Vicky Forrester
    23 Jan 2012 | 5:34 pm
Well, I am impressed! Nick really pushed the techniques to produce all these rings! This weekend we had a lovely group of highly motivated individuals, mostly with no previous experience in making, who all went smiling home with rattling pockets and jingling fingers – proud makers of some really fine pieces of jewellery! The focus was on texturing techniques, and we also introduced some basic forging processes. Several students wanted to add copper to their silver rings for their final design, and so after initial experimentation, by popular demand, we also introduced sweat soldering.

  • The Value of Gold Yesterday & Today

    admin
    26 Apr 2012 | 12:15 pm
The value of gold today has increased drastically in comparison to the value of gold back in the 1920s.  Customers who are interested in selling gold at cash for gold stores always have the same question” why is it that such a small amount of gold is worth so much?”.  There is a historical and economical reason why gold is so valuable today. The Gold Standard In the 1920s, America operated on The Gold Standard.  This prevented the Federal Reserve from from expanding the money supply needed to stimulate the economy, fund insolvent banks and fund government deficits necessary to “prime…

Gold, in its purist form is vibrant yellow in color and extremely soft. Pure gold is so soft that it cannot be used unless combined with other metal alloys.  The amount of pure gold in the alloy is measured in Carats as indicated by “k”. Usually the following carats are used: 24 Carats-(pure gold), 22k, 18k, 14k and 10k. The higher the carat, the more gold content it contains. The lower the carat, the more metal base alloy content it contains. Mostly copper is used but silver and other metals are also used to make gold alloys. The Titanic departed Southampton, England on April 10th, 1912 and was set to dock in New York on April 15th, 1912. Unfortunately, the supposedly unsinkable Great Titanic was short lived.  It met its final resting place after colliding with an iceburg in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 14th, 1912. It wasn’t until 1985, 73 years later, that the Titanic was rediscovered. Since then, many scientists and historians have devoted their entire life to unearth the mystery of the Titanic and why it sank.  Thanks to their devotion and dedication, we have gained great insight and knowledge on the…
  • Should I Sell My Gold Now or Wait for the Price of Gold to Rise?

    admin
    18 Apr 2012 | 2:09 pm
It can be a very stressful for a person when it comes to deciding the best time to sell gold jewelry for cash. The best advice for anyone wishing to make some extra cash by selling their gold jewelry is to do your own research.  After that, it’s a matter of following your guts to determine the most profitable time to part with your old jewelry.
