Last week I had the chance to talk with Dorothée Gizenga, executive director of the Diamond Development Initiative, about how the Ebola outbreak is impacting the lives and livelihoods of the artisanal diamond diggers the organization aids. For those unfamiliar, the DDI works to improve the lives of artisanal miners in Africa and South America. Right now, the organization has one pilot program in place, in the Kono District of Sierra Leone. There, the DDI is working to create the Development Diamond Standards by training diggers on sound social and environmental practices and then helping…

This young lady, the journalist who shadowed her for an afternoon tells us, seems inherently “wired” for sales, possessing a natural understanding that even many adults don’t have: When you are in sales, it’s about the person doing the selling, not what you are pedaling. EGL Platinum is not the first EGL-branded lab to speak out on this issue; EGL USA and EGL South Africa (EGL SA) issued similar statements several weeks ago when the Rapaport Group first announced its decision. On Monday, NPR aired a story on why many jewelry stores choose to tuck away their price tags rather than display them. For me, the story highlighted two interesting points. Number one, many consumers remain, for reasons I have a hard time understanding because I know the industry so well, inherently distrustful of jewelers. Two, transparency is imperative in retailing today. For the story, NPR reporter Stacey Vanek Smith visited The Clay Pot in Brooklyn, N.Y. and interviewed store owner Tara Silberberg about why there aren’t price tags on any of the pieces in her store. NPR pointed out the…

  • Collection Spotlight: Alexis Bittar’s Holiday Collection of Fine Jewelry

    24 Oct 2014 | 12:00 am
That quasi-futuristic yet refined signature style belonging to Alexis Bittar has been a hit for years, particularly among fine-jewelry fans since he debuted karat gold and precious stone offerings in 2013. I’m still smitten with the looks, featuring knife edges, watery stone colors, sharp-edged prongs, minimalist silhouettes, playful clusters of pear- and marquise-shape stones, and navette motifs—all signatures of his work. Bittar’s graceful jewelry stories play out in understated...

    2 Sep 2014 | 4:01 am
September is going to be an exciting month, especially if you are a fan of unique jewellery. There are so many, very talented Scottish designer jewellers working in Scotland but the lime light always seems to be in London. For years London has been home of  Jewellery Week and many of the largest jewellery shows are down there, such as Goldsmiths Fair, IJL (International Jewellery London). Unfortunately there are not any high profile jewellery fairs in Scotland so it’s hard for Scottish jewellers to showcase their work unless they exhibit in London. I have been thinking for years…

Therefore, the color of Balin may be from mouse-gray or yellow to dark-red or black. At the same time, it has streaks of cinnabar, which are painted in bright red and form a very original and beautiful pattern on the surface of polished  balin that resembles the spots or streaks of blood. Because of the appearance it got its English name - “chicken blood stone”. Balin has silky sometimes matted luster, its hardness ranges from 2.0 to 3.0 and its density ranges between…

  • Jewelry Industry Should Invest in Diamond Diggers, NGO Leader Says

    Greg K.
    21 Oct 2014 | 1:39 am
There are about a million artisanal diamond diggers in Africa who live in extreme poverty. For the last century they’ve been mostly forgotten, left to toil in dangerous pits while barely earning enough to eat. But now a group based in Ottawa is leading an initiative to change that—to raise labor and environmental standards and give diamond diggers a fair deal. It’s called the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI), and it’s one of the groups that we support at Brilliant Earth through our non-profit fund. I recently had the privilege to talk with Dorothée Gizenga, DDI’s Executive…

  • Why Aren’t Diamonds Sold Like Wine?

    Greg K.
    9 Oct 2014 | 2:37 pm
If you’ve ever been to a wine tasting, you know that a lot of the fun is in the guessing game. Tasters are served a series of wines, or a flight, without first being told a country of origin, vineyard, or year for each wine. After the flight, the identity of each wine is revealed.   Diamond shopping is like that, sort of. Go to any jewelry shop and you’ll be able to see lots of different pieces of diamond jewelry. At first, for each diamond, the salesperson probably won’t volunteer where the diamond was mined. But there’s one big difference. Very likely, you’ll never find out…

Karl Lagerfeld made headlines yesterday with his “Girl Power” influenced Chanel show, where models finished the runway toting feminist picket signs. The show’s theme has perfect timing as Emma Watson gave a great speech last week at the United Nations on gender equality — sparking a viral social campaign tagged #HeForShe. The mix of signs and psychedelic swirls brings back the imagery of the powerful women of the 1960s and 70s, and Lagerfeld wasn’t the only one feeling the hippie chic. The key was that he wanted it to have that 'Wow!' factor when she opened the box, but without being overdone. Every woman wants to be…

Today, many of these businesses live on alongside  new…

So what’s the price of turning your beloved into an expensive gemstone? Well, it begins from $5,000 and can go as high as $20,000. And is the diamond clarity compromised in the process? Nope. Willy explains that the grieving clients…

Diamonds are a woman’s best friend, but these besties might soon prove to be harder to come by because the Diamond Trading Corporation (DTC) (which is an umbrella corporation of De Beers) has decided to raise the diamond prices of rough diamonds anywhere between 3%-5%. And since De Beers is the world’s largest supplier and miner of diamonds, we’d say that the hike in the prices is pretty permanent. This has proven to be a huge setback for those in the business of diamond processing as well as the customers, especially in India, where almost 85% of the world’s diamond polishing and the…

The Charm of Opal Rings Nature has its share of wonders; and sometimes, those wonders can take millions of years to form. Opal is one such product of nature’s wonders. It is a precious stone formed from deposits of silica that were accumulated in sedimentary rocks as well as the remains of plants and animals. The Claddagh ring originated from Claddagh, a former fishing village that is situated near the center of Galway City. As the village enjoyed trade with nearby places such as Spain, the knowledge of ring making eventually landed on Claddagh’s shores. Production…

What is colloquially called a promise ring can refer to two things: the pre-engagement ring and the purity ring. Those two rings build on the entire premise of a promise. The pre-engagement ring is anchored on the promise of a fruitful monogamous relationship, while the purity ring is anchored on the promise of abstaining from any sexual activity until marriage. There are also promise rings that signify a vow to uphold something for a long time, such as friendship, loyalty, or a self-commitment to remain morally and ethically upright in the midst of an immoral society. The scope of this…
