We’ve discussed jewelry as a form of protection in historical times (to ward off evil and bring luck) but this story gives a whole new meaning to its magical properties. Janeice Frisbee of Humboldt, Tenn., was shot point-blank in the chest last week, and by all accounts, she survived because her necklace stopped the bullet. “No one can believe that bullet didn’t go through that necklace,” Frisbee told WMC Action News 5. The $45 Tree of Life necklace, made of sterling silver wire and small gemstones, was a gift from Frisbee’s son and daughter-in-law. It was purchased from…

On April 6th Sotheby’s will open the auction season of 2015 – and they will do it with a bang. The upcoming auction features 319 lots and an amazing number of colored diamonds jewelry – 31. I have to confess, when I started this post it was titled “3 highlights from the upcoming Sotheby’s auction“. Unfortunately, 3 was far from being enough. With that in mind, here are the ones that I could not resist writing about: The Shimmering Sun – 77.77 Carat Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond Ring 77.77 Carat Vivid Yellow Diamond Ring Sotheby’s The number 7 is…

  • Sales are slipping, but for whom?

    Michelle Graff
    13 Mar 2015 | 3:32 pm
When the U.S. Department of Commerce released their jewelry and watch sales figures for 2014 it wasn’t a pretty picture and it hasn’t improved in the new year. Total U.S. jewelry sales—including specialty jewelers, merchants like Walmart, Costco, J.C. Penney, etc., and online-only retailers—have been declining a little bit each month since October, including the key (are they still key?) months of November and December. Sales were down 0.8 percent year-over-year in November, fell 2 percent in December and were down 4 percent in January, Commerce Department data shows. When we talked…

Lots of big things have been going on for Etsy lately. The online marketplace for handmade goods officially launched its wholesale business last August, aiming to get its products in more stores around the country. Then, just last week, it announced that it was making moves to become a public company. But one of my favorite pieces of news about Etsy so far was the craft site’s partnership with the American Museum of Natural History here in New York. The museum and some Etsy designers teamed up to create products inspired by nature and the exhibits on display. The products are being sold…

We are in the midst of a period of tremendous social change. Have you noticed? Women’s cries for equal pay for equal work–a notion that dates back at least as far as Susan B. Anthony–are getting louder, and we work to continue to chip away at the shame that has always surrounded sexual assault. In the United States, this is particularly visible at the college level, as young adults mobilize to bring attention to rapes on campuses across the nation and higher-education institutions’ long-standing habit of trying to hide them. The movement is not limited to young women. Young…

As you might have read earlier this week, Brazilian jewelry brand H. Stern has opened a pop-up shop in New York’s SoHo neighborhood while its flagship location on Fifth Avenue undergoes renovations. I stopped by the space Wednesday afternoon to check it out and talk with the brand’s executive vice president, Ronaldo Stern. “We want to keep the brand hot,” Stern told me when I asked why they erected the temporary store, which will stay open through July. “When you open a pop-up, you don’t know what you’re going to get. We wanted to experiment.” “SoHo is about exploring,”…

I’m guilty of being one of those people who can easily get lost in cat/dog/really any animal videos on the Internet, or distracted by a pet’s Instagram or Facebook page for … well, we’ll just say a long time. (You guys know Facebook-famous Boo, right? He’s so cute that he looks more like a stuffed animal than a real animal. And he’s also my favorite.) You add a cute little pet to a jewelry Instagram account that already features beautiful pieces, and I can’t imagine a more perfect recipe for success. Not only does the Internet collectively freak out over any cat pictures, but…

  • Gemstone Bracelets & Freshwater Pearl Necklaces for Spring

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    15 Mar 2015 | 8:34 am
Iolite Bracelet  I've finally had my fill of snow. I'm ready for Spring, for the cherry blossoms, for kayaks, and for walks in the neighborhood.  I'm also ready for more jewelry, as I am always!    Above, the first bracelet is a favorite of mine for 2 reasons: it features iolites, the "water sapphires" that are a pretty dark blue, and the tiny Karen Hill Tribes sterling silver beads that make such great strands with gemstones. Lots of little sterling charms dangle at intervals along the bracelet.   Below, a labradorite bracelet that is a simple one strand…
  • Cheery Pink, Green and Aqua for Spring

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    15 Feb 2015 | 5:19 pm
Rhodochrosite Bracelet    At 18 degrees here outside, I know that there are other people dreaming of Spring (not I; I love this!)  Just a couple of pieces today that I've finished this weekend.  Above and below, a gemstone bracelet in rhodochrosite, a pink gemstone that is relatively rare on the jewelry scene. This bracelet has 4 strands: one of gemstones, two of Thai Karen Hill Tribes tiny sterling silver beads accented with a few rhodochrosites, and a sterling silver oval-linked chain with sterling silver charms, a fleur de lis and 2 puffy hearts.  The clasp is a…

Mookaite Bracelet featuring the color Marsala   It's cold and gray here in Arlington, Virginia, but that's okay because when it's cold and gray outside, I get lots of work done inside.  And I have so much work to do!     I am looking forward to my visit from my Brazilian daughter, Fernanda, next week!  She is always a breath of fresh air, and I haven't gotten to see her for a while.  Thank goodness she has a job that brings her to the US periodically and allows her to come to see us.  We've known her since she was 16 and came to stay with us in…
  • Gemstone Bracelets with Color

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    14 Jan 2015 | 3:20 pm
I love color in the middle of cold winter.  Above and below, Pierres a Trois is a gemstone bracelet with a strand of citrine a strand of garnet, and a strand of apatite.  Sterling silver charms hang around the bracelet and a sturdy sterling silver toggle clasp is the closure. Guaranteed to go with something you have in your closet! Below, purple goes so well with labradorite whether it's in the form of Swarovski crystals (tanzanite color) or in this case, genuine gemstone amethyst.  Very flashy labradorite and pretty quality amethysts make this bracelet very special.
  • Garnets: The January Birthstone

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    4 Jan 2015 | 10:36 am
I am extremely fond of garnets and wear them almost everyday.  I have an oval garnet ring I love that I've had for many years; it goes with everything and especially looks good with black.  I have made myself a garnet nugget bracelet that I wear also almost everyday.  The garnets are large (large garnets are hard to come by) and the flat faceted nuggets really catch the light.  The best part is that garnet jewelry goes from an everyday situation to a dressy one and looks perfect for both.   Above and below, a garnet bracelet very like the one that I wear…

    20 Mar 2015 | 7:00 am
About a week ago, I was waxing romantic about my adoration of fancy yellow diamonds. In particular, the emerald cut fancy yellow diamonds on either side of this ring. These fancy yellow emerald cuts are a sight to behold – we never get fancy yellow step cut diamonds in the store. But why? Why are step cuts so rare in untreated fancy yellow diamonds? Well, it’s all about color, the biggest selling point of any fancy yellow diamond. In a white diamond, the cut is used to minimize the presence of any color. In a fancy yellow, the yellower, the … Read More → The post Why…

Many diamonds receive a certificate before they arrive at the retail point – your local jeweler. This assures you, the one shelling out the big bucks, that you’re getting what you pay for. Diamond grading labs across the globe produce certificates. The authority of all of them though, is…

The princess cut was made popular in 1979 by three Israeli designers Ygal Perlman, Betzalel Ambar, and Israel Itzkowitz. Princess cuts started out as a fashion statement, but have become the second most popular shape in diamonds after the round brilliant. A princess cut diamond is traditionally square in shape and you will find that it is referred to as a “square modified brilliant” in lab reports. The term modified refers to the cut being non-standard and most brilliant-cut fancy shapes will be referred to as modified. For a princess cut to take on a square shape, the length-to-width…

Lore says the world’s first diamond was discovered 6,000 years ago. They have dazzled both commoner and royalty alike, and in myth are associated with the gods. They passed on into the mythos surrounding thrones and crowns studded with fabulous stones, to be looted by invaders who lusted after treasure. 10 Mar 2015 | 4:44 am
Q: Hi Liz, I am looking for something between 1.25 – 1.5 ct round cut but I am leaning towards 1.25ct. My budget of the entire ring is 10-15k. I am looking for an I color or better. This is the area I struggle the most with. I can not tell which flaw types and where they are on the stone are most viable if at all. I have read that an I or better color would work with a…
