For many of us, Lego bricks were a part of our childhood, affording us fond memories of immense discomfort and pain after stepping on a loose one buried in the carpet. I hadn’t seen a Lego in quite some time, until designer JacQueline Sanchez reached out to me to share her Forever Young collection, her signature line that offers 50 pieces fashioned from Lego bricks and sterling silver. Lego is derived from the Danish words “leg godt,” Sanchez told me, which means “play well.” In Latin, Lego means “put together.” “I wanted to create something with color and have fun,” Sanchez…

    20 Aug 2015 | 7:31 am
All week my best friend, who is six months pregnant and pretty much confined to her home due to the 90-degree-plus heat, has been eagerly texting me links to stories that have been published online following The New York Times article on the workplace culture at Amazon. Having both come up through the boot camp-like experience that is a daily newspaper, we’ve had a bit of a chuckle over some (though certainly not all) of the complaints  from workers there. Long hours? Calls late at night and on supposed off days? Unreasonable output expectations? Crying at desks? Ruthless culling of people…

I love meeting and learning about new designers and collections; it’s one of my favorite parts of this job. Most recently I met Ruta Reifen, a Brooklyn-based designer who presented her jewelry collection to a panel I was part of at the JA New York show called “The Big Pitch,” where 12 new designers from the recently held JA New York Summer show were invited to present their jewelry collection to a panel of retailers and one member of the press (yours truly). Her debut collection, “So Fine,” consists of earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets in 14-karat gold and sterling silver…

It is from Ecclesiastes 1:9 and is part of the verse that reads in full, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” I bring this particular phrase up today because it is the one that pops into my head every time I go to one of the antique jewelry shows, either here in New York or out in Las Vegas. Walking up and down the aisles at these shows…

It’s that time of the week again! The day we get to indulge in some sparkling, mouth watering engagement ring eye candy. After swooning over square halo engagement rings last week, this week I was feeling something a little more stark, a little more old school. I feel drawn to stunning, three stone engagement rings. My own ring is a three stone cathedral style beauty, and I love the symmetry and elegance of a three stone ring in a clean platinum or gold setting. I also took this fun quiz and didn’t love the ring it chose for me, but … Read More → The post Engagement…

And when you factor in the halo style’s trendiness, the staying power of the round diamond gives reassurance to those who worry that their tastes may change or evolve. The RB isn’t going anywhere,…

  • Why You Should Only Buy a GIA Certified Diamond

    keith
    27 Aug 2015 | 11:56 am
A diamond certificate is an expert third party opinion. It states the quality of every aspect of a diamond. Without this certification you are left to trust the jeweler’s estimates. This can cause a potential conflict because the jeweler is the one trying to sell you the diamond. Buying a certified diamond will usually cost a little more because the diamond had to go through a lab of gemologists that have carefully graded every aspect of the diamond. This is a very minor expense that is worth many times its cost for your protection. There are thousands of labs that grade diamonds. They all…

This also holds true for all your valuable jewelry. It is not easy to establish a guideline for the value in which you should begin considering insuring fine jewelry. Every individual situation is unique, but a value of $4,000 for each piece can be accurate in most cases. Jim Donovan, Angie’s List 13-time Emmy Award-winning consumer reporter has written a wonderful article on this important topic. Here it…

There’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in celebration of a July birthday. Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love. Ruby is a variety of the gems species corundum. It is harder than any natural gemstone except diamond, which means a ruby is durable enough for everyday wear. Fine-quality ruby is extremely rare, and the color of the gem is most important to its value. The most prized color is a medium or medium dark vivid red or slightly purplish red. The first information about the…

Luxury hotels, department stores, and restaurants are always pushing the limits of grandeur to impress their customers. And what could make a hotel or restaurant look more lavish than a drink or suite package that comes with a real diamond? Even if the $10,000 martini with bling at the bottom doesn’t sell very well, it certainly generates press and adds splendor to a cocktail menu. What is the marketing advantage of these extravagant package deals? “People of extraordinary wealth want a story you can tell, or an experience you can share on social media,” says Allen Adamson, branding…

Walking along a coastline of a beach and one notices a pearl in the sand. It is just there in the sand in all its iridescent luster. One may wonder, where did it come from? Pearls come from oysters, but how is a pearl formed? A pearl is formed inside of an oyster.  Contrary to popular belief it is hardly ever formed from sand, water and other debris that get into an oyster. Overtime, these can cause discoloration of the pearl as it is formed. It is actually a little more miraculous than that. A pearl is formed inside an oyster, when a wayward food particle becomes trapped in its mollusk. It…

The chosen accessories of the day does involve rings doesn’t it?  But if Reality star Kim Zolciak says that the Ring, the ring don’t mean a thing, and scores of celebrities don’t wear theirs, should the rest of the world be taking heed? Not to call anyone out, but for reals, check out how long…

We have a birthday party tonight for my mom's friend and I will be having a little bbq Saturday (let's keep our fingers crossed for some good weather) Anyways enough about the weekend, we do have to get through the next couple hours of work. For a few years now Sylvia and I have been talking about giving back, and although we donated a little here and there, we hadn't found the "right" organization to work with until now. So here it is (drum-roll).... We have partnered up with Kiva to help make a difference! With every purchase you make, we will donate a percentage to help empower Filipino women in need. Why women from Philippines you may ask. We picked women in the Philippines because this is where most of our handcrafted jewelry is made. It is such a thrill for us to be working with yet another amazing mother-daughter team! The ladies from Pat's at Chautauqua are just fabulous. The store started in 1988 by Patricia, a stay at home mom of 5. She began by making everything in store by hand and gradually started offering unique lines of clothing, jewelry, accessories, shoes, and art work. Her daughter Katherine now works with her, and just like us, they have a blast doing what they love. Pat's always has unique designs so if you are lucky enough to be visiting Chautauqua, NY stop by and say hi to them! XOXO Sylvia & Camila

  • Looking For Diamond To Set In Tacori Petite Crescent Engagement Ring

Q: Hi Liz, I’ve been looking at diamonds at Ritani and Enchanted — both of which I found through your awesome site (I’ll make sure you get the referral by clicking from your site when I’m ready to buy.) I’m going to put a round diamond (1.8-2.1 ct size) into this Tacori Petite Crescent ring in white gold… http://www.tacori.com/ht2547rd7  aI’ve not been considering any diamonds without an ASET and/or Idealscope image. .70ct F VS1 from Enchanted Diamonds for $3,000 Q: Hi Liz, I came across your site and have found it very helpful in understanding what to look for when searching online for “the” ring. My girlfriend knows exactly what she wants and always has, which can be very intimidating when searching. Her dream ring is a 1.00ct oval diamond set in a halo ring setting with a plain slim band in white gold. She pays special attention to how the halo diamonds are spaced and prefers them to not have much space between one to the next (little to no gaps). As for the diamond, I don’t know if…

In 2005 Dateline NBC aired an expose on how diamonds are evaluated and sold entitled, ‘Diamonds, Is There Such A Thing As A Deal?” Has anything changed in the last ten years since the airing of this investigation?   No Such Thing As A Diamond Certificate When a consumer enters a brick and mortar jewelry store, meets up with a local diamond dealer, or shops online they are often told that the diamond is ‘certified’. Diamond certification is a misnomer and not an accurate term of what a gem lab report really is. Let’s take GIA for example. Their…
  • Best Value Diamonds – Color vs. Clarity

    Liz Hancock
    18 Aug 2015 | 7:26 am
Q: First off, thank you for offering this free consultation, it’s very much appreciated. So, let me start off by outlining what I ‘want’ out of a diamond – I want the best overall value delivered to me, not to the market. Hence, I don’t care about fluorescence or other things that contribute to diamond price, but not to appearance. What I want, is the best value for a diamond that looks good – so a clear color, eye clean, etc. From my research, I’ve gleaned that a very good, round cut diamond rated at SI1 to VSI, H color or better, under 1 ct (so as…

Some jewelry pieces are classics, and every woman would do well by building a basic jewelry wardrobe that includes a strand of pearls.
