    29 Jan 2015 | 7:25 am
This year marked my first trip to Vicenza, Italy for the Vicenzaoro show and, I must say, it was the most fun I’ve had at a trade show in a long time. Part of this probably was due to the fact that, as a fellow journalist told me, there were a lot of new and exciting creations this year, which hasn’t been the case the past couple of years. My time at the show also furthered my belief that it’s absolutely vital to have people who are genuinely excited about their jobs working for you, whether they are journalists, designers or salespeople. Employees with a true enthusiasm for the product…

    26 Jan 2015 | 7:07 am
I had almost forgotten how much I loved stones, minerals, and gems until I found myself at this job and in the fine jewelry industry. But it makes so much sense now. I used to have a tumbled rock collection that I was obsessed with and would guard from my siblings with my life, and was always on the lookout for the best ones to add to my collection. One of my favorite field trips of all time was when I went to the gem mines in Hiddenite, N.C., in elementary school, about an hour-and-a-half west of where I grew up. According to its website, Hiddenite currently is the only emerald mine in the…

I have been doing something scary lately: I’ve been leaving the house without my phone. Not for long periods of time–say, an entire 8-hour span–but rather just a stretch of a few hours, on a weekend afternoon or on those rare workdays when I escape my office for a bit at lunch. So far, the negative repercussions have been few, and the rewards many. No one in any life-threatening situations was unable to reach me and I didn’t miss out on any vital social functions or information, insofar as I can tell. Instead, I was forced to focus on the people I was with (downside: they…

    24 Dec 2014 | 7:31 am
Earlier this year, it would have been hard to believe that anything could top the consolidation of the industry’s two largest players, Zale Corp. and Signet Jewelers Ltd., in terms of news for 2014. When the shareholders quit squabbling and both parties signed on the dotted line in late May, I envisioned the acquisition topping this very list, my annual recap of the year’s biggest stories. Little did I know what lay ahead, as 2014 would be the year the issue of diamond over-grading would erupt and Hearts on Fire would head overseas. Here are what I believe to be the three biggest stories…

At first, I thought this blog would be easy as pie. Pick my favorite gemstone jewels that I saw this year? You got it. But the more I started looking through old photos, stories and events, the harder I realized it was. How was I ever going to narrow it down? It was such a great year for designing in gemstones, with many colored stones coming to the attention of both celebrities and consumers. Not to mention, I was getting myself acquainted with many stones that were new to me. Since 2014 was also my first full year as a member of the fine jewelry industry, I found that my tastes were…

  • Gemstone Bracelets with Color

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    14 Jan 2015 | 3:20 pm
I love color in the middle of cold winter.  Above and below, Pierres a Trois is a gemstone bracelet with a strand of citrine a strand of garnet, and a strand of apatite.  Sterling silver charms hang around the bracelet and a sturdy sterling silver toggle clasp is the closure. Guaranteed to go with something you have in your closet! Below, purple goes so well with labradorite whether it's in the form of Swarovski crystals (tanzanite color) or in this case, genuine gemstone amethyst.  Very flashy labradorite and pretty quality amethysts make this bracelet very special.
  • Garnets: The January Birthstone

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    4 Jan 2015 | 10:36 am
I am extremely fond of garnets and wear them almost everyday.  I have an oval garnet ring I love that I've had for many years; it goes with everything and especially looks good with black.  I have made myself a garnet nugget bracelet that I wear also almost everyday.  The garnets are large (large garnets are hard to come by) and the flat faceted nuggets really catch the light.  The best part is that garnet jewelry goes from an everyday situation to a dressy one and looks perfect for both.   Above and below, a garnet bracelet very like the one that I wear…

Ah, the frenzy of the holiday season begins! And no where is it more frenzied than here on the fourth floor in my studio.  I watched heavy snowflakes today (that unfortunately melted right away) only when I chanced to look up from my busy workbench.  I will be closing shop starting December 13th this year, so be sure to get any custom orders right away!   Above, a multi-gemstone bracelet with sterling silver contains several shades of touraline including pink and green, aquamarine, citrine, apatite, and chrysoprase.  Three sterling silver charms dangle on one side of…

Apatite BraceletI have been spending some time in Hot Springs, Arkansas lately where my best friend and most of my family live. That means that I am woefully behind on so many things and  I am struggling to catch up.  From the Fall Collection, now long overdue to be shown, are these bracelets that look great alone or stacked together on the wrist.  Above is a bracelet with sterling silver, apatite and a single lotus charm; below,  a similar bracelet with gem-quality faceted coin amethysts, sterling silver, and a fleur de lis charm.  The bracelet has a lobster…

Fall is almost here and with it will come the new Cluny Grey Fall Collection. Meanwhile, here are a few pieces I've finished lately.Above, a fluorite bracelet with a dichroic focal bead echoing the colors in the green and purple fluorite.  This bracelet is made with some of my favorite faceted fluorite nuggets in beautiful shades including a blue fluorite.Below, a sunstone bracelet with flashing sunstone and a 14 karat gold-filled large-linked textured…

    29 Jan 2015 | 12:00 am
VicenzaOro is being resuscitated. For years it seemed like the show’s energy and offerings were flagging, with few exciting pieces and buyers to help drive momentum forward. But with Matteo Marzotto coming on as Fiera di Vicenza president last year and joining Corrado Facco, existing general director, a new show layout and subtle updates to the decor may prove to be the refresher that the 69-year-old fair needed. Here are six jewelry-trend observations from my time walking the show floor, and...

Fruit and vegetable faces as inspiration? It sounds ridiculous, but it’s a fact for Italian jewelry design house Mattioli, which fashioned a limited four-piece collection of 18k gold and gemstone rings created in the likeness of produce portraits by 16th-century Milanese artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.Licia Mattioli captures the whimsy and wonder of Arcimboldo’s oil paintings of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II as the character of Vertumnus, the Roman god of plant life, growth, and the change of...

A pastel symphony of irregularly faceted, hexagon-shape pale-purple and green amethyst marry in a snowflake-like gold pendant necklace from Falcinelli at the 2015 VicenzaOro show. These oversize stone varieties and shapes are abundant in the world, but that compilation and design—is that a pinwheel in the center?—speaks to the world-renowned Italian color sensibility and aesthetic. This is why we come to Italy each year to see jewelry! Few nations of jewelry designers capture beauty like the...

With this completed hooked wall hanging of my springer spaniel I learned a few things and had some epiphanies.  Here's just a sampling:All art forms use similar elements and processes.  Colors in fiber can be used like colors in tubes of paint.  Shadows are not gray, but blues and purples... or perhaps even green.Pay attention to where the light comes from and where it hits your object to give your piece dimension. Start with a good drawing and you have the framework to create something beautiful.Don't be afraid to tear out something that isn't working, but walk away and…

  • Origin of the Medical Emergency Symbol

    Kylie Thigpen
    15 Jan 2015 | 9:31 am
Medical Emergency Symbols: What the heck is with all of the snakes? In medical circles, there are two very similar symbols that represent healing.  One is known as the Caduceus.  The other is the staff of Asclepius. The Caduceus symbol, which has two snakes on a pole that’s topped with wings, is most closely associated with the Greek god Hermes (known to Romans as Mercury). Asclepius, however, was a Greek physician, the son of Apollo.  By the 5th century BC, he was widely regarded as the Greek god of healing and medicine because of the amazing healing powers he possessed.  In fact,…

    28 Jan 2015 | 7:43 am
We often hear the term “personalized jewelry” in place of custom design. And while they fall loosely in the same category, there remains a difference. Custom design encompasses the whole process of creating a unique piece of jewelry, based on the customer’s needs. Personalized jewelry (at least in our eyes) is a design aspect of a piece of jewelry, like inscribing a ring with a message. Here’s more on personalized jewelry:   Personalized jewelry can be a gift, but it also can be a statement that is timeless. Pieces can be customized with names, anniversary…

From Los Angeles, New York City to London, gifts for the bridesmaids and groomsmen have similar trends. If the wedding will be three to four days of celebration, say at a destination wedding, brides like to give personalized robes, beach sandals or tote bags to the bridal party members, even a miniature for the flower girls, even though they will not be attending the weekend parties. Grooms men enjoy personalized gifts as well, but more party functional, like their own personalized mugs or flasks, pen knives or pocket-watches. Jan 29 (Record Eagle) — Thirty years from now, when some theorists say that driving might be replaced by autonomous pods that chauffeur us around, will enthusiasts be as excited about cars like the BMW i8 as today’s car collectors are about a vintage Mustang or Corvette? Some people, no doubt, will make that bet and stash an i8 in a climate-controlled garage, hoping for a future windfall. That scheme sometimes works. Vincent C.
    5 Jan 2015 | 8:11 am
The princess cut was made popular in 1979 by three Israeli designers Ygal Perlman, Betzalel Ambar, and Israel Itzkowitz. Princess cuts started out as a fashion statement, but have become the second most popular shape in diamonds after the round brilliant. A princess cut diamond is traditionally square in shape and you will find that it is referred to as a “square modified brilliant” in lab reports. The term modified refers to the cut being non-standard and most brilliant-cut fancy shapes will be referred to as modified. For a princess cut to take on a square shape, the length-to-width…

Ever heard of the Tiffany Yellow diamond? It has been with Tiffany & Co since the year 1878, and the company itself has no confirmed records regarding the origin of this dazzling stone. However, it’s said that the stone was found in one of the Kimberley mines in South Africa in the year 1877 or 1878. The mining company in charge sent to stone to Paris to sell it off, where New York jeweler Charles Tiffany paid $18,000 to acquire it. Weighing 297.42-carat, this jewel could easily be crafted into several gorgeous yellow diamond engagement rings (or one stellar ring), BUT that was not…

Q: Hey Liz, You have a great site here! Thank you for taking the time to help out people on this awesome journey. So right now I am looking for a balance of quality and size for a budget (not including setting) of $20k. I have been looking at Zoara and have come to these conclusions: 1. I am going to end up around 2.5 ct round brilliant 2. I am going to go with a J or I color – I had someone begin to talk me out of a J color 3. Eye clean is really all that matters. I would say VS2 or SI1. I came across a stone with natural indentations and it freaked me out but people tell me it’s…

But I also hope it could also be eye-clean. If not then hopefully eye clean enough from 5 inches from viewing the diamond at 5 inches. If you can help me look for more that would be great. I will be going to the diamond district to take a look at some diamonds this weekend, since I have never seen…

    16 Jan 2015 | 3:09 am
Q: Hi Liz, I’m looking for an engagement ring, but I figure I’ll buy a loose stone first. My budget for a loose stone is $11,000. That said, I’m looking to get the best diamond around 1.45-1.55 carats. I’m looking to place this stone in a 6 prong setting on a medium thickness platinum band. After doing research, I was told to look for: 1) Excellent Cut with a table under 60% (but what does table mean?) 2.) G-I Color. I heard I can get away with I color on a platinum band. 3.) VS2 Any recommendations? I was looking for diamonds from either JamesAllen or Zoara or Blue…

Based on my research (I’ve looked at a number of sites) coupled with the customer service, prices and quality, I’m leaning towards purchasing a diamond from Whiteflash. I’m looking for a princess cut diamond in the 2.0ctw range (G-I color, V1-SI1 clarity, I’m willing to spend up to 25k, but the less money the better). I’ve limited my search down to a handful of diamonds and was hoping you could review them and provide your opinion on which diamond you…
