    14 Apr 2015 | 6:56 am
Simple studs and gold-toned and geometrically shaped jewelry appeared to be the common factor at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, held Sunday at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. While J. Lo wore bold gold hoops and gold bracelets and rings by Chimento, others kept it simple; Scarlett Johansson donned gold drop earrings, and Brittany Snow accessorized with geometric ear climbers. Not all red carpet events bring out the serious bling. In some instances, celebrities or their stylists go for smaller, more subtle pieces that let an outfit sing, which was the case at the MTV Movie Awards, where high…

A few weeks back, I attended the Women’s Jewelry Association In the Know conference here in New York City. After leading a (splendid) talk on what editors like to see from designers, I had the chance to take in the last session of the conference, which also happened to be the final of three keynote speakers: Jennifer Hyman, CEO of Rent the Runway. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Rent the Runway, which Hyman co-founded with her Harvard Business School classmate Jennifer Fleiss, is a website where women go and pay a reasonable rate to rent a lovely dress for a special occasion. When they…

Isn’t it always nice to hear that donated funds actually have helped a person or organization reach a goal? Think about it. As consumers, we’re often asked at checkout lines to donate a dollar to one organization or the other. Sometimes we’re asked in other places, too; outside grocery stores, through the mail, perhaps at fairs or other community events. Of all the times you’ve donated, how often did you hear back from the organization to let you know your dollar made a difference? Many of us in the jewelry industry are lucky enough to say we have, first-hand, seen the difference our…

Ever since I started at National Jeweler and began learning more about the auction world as we covered results from Bonhams, Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and more, I’ve been intrigued by it. By what drives people to buy, why they’ll spend a certain amount, what ends up being really popular and what that means for trends. But most of all, I’ve been super curious about the actual auction process. For a long time I’ve been meaning to go see it all happen in person, but I wanted it to be an auction where I was especially intrigued by what was being sold. When Bonhams announced that they…

We’ve come to expect wild fashion displays on the runway. It’s part of the theatrics and certainly not intended for streetwear. But designer house Givenchy took it one step beyond at a recent fashion show where intricate face jewelry almost upstaged the clothing. Body art migrated to the face at Givenchy’s Fall 2015 runway show for Paris Fashion Week on Sunday. There, the models’ cheeks and noses competed with their gothic-inspired garments for the audience’s attention. Pat McGrath, the show’s makeup artist, told Style.com it took six hours to complete the…

Lore says the world’s first diamond was discovered 6,000 years ago. They have dazzled both commoner and royalty alike, and in myth are associated with the gods. They passed on into the mythos surrounding thrones and crowns studded with fabulous stones, to be looted by invaders who lusted after treasure. Known as the hardest substance in the world, although they are not indestructible. Diamonds can be cut or polished only by another diamond, but a strong blow is enough to make a chip on them. Here are some tips on keeping your diamond jewelry sparkling and lustrous as ever. After an evening…

It is interesting, amusing, and worth a quick look. Halle Berry has tied the knot again. We’re hoping that the third time is a charm for this soon-to-be mom of two. Will her marriage to Olivier Martinez be able to stand the test of time? Since my crystal ball is in the shop, I thought I’d investigate some other predictors of relationship success. Did you know that your wedding ring can actually indicate the kind of relationship…

Did you know that diamonds are valued based on what tone their body color is? Natural white diamonds graduate to three popular body colors including the commonly known yellow, and the lesser known brown and gray. These tones are in reference to diamonds graded anywhere from D – Z (colorless, near colorless, faint, very light and light) and not to be confused with fancy diamond colors (high color saturation and intensity; color beyond Z grade). As you would imagine, the diamond industry sometimes values the less commonly known tones of brown and gray at a lower price point. However, I…

Q: Hi Liz, Thank you for the immense amount of information on your site. It has been very helpful in narrowing my search for the perfect diamond. I’ve come down to 4 different Whiteflash ACA diamonds all within the same parameters and wanted a professional opinion on the little nuances of each and which you thought was best (or if you have another recommendation). If it’s not too much to ask, could you please give me your opinion on each. Thank you for your time. Below are the links to the 4 diamonds: Option 1:…

    23 Mar 2015 | 9:51 am
The portable ideal-scope is a small glass or plastic viewer surrounded by a black and red plastic funnel that is used to further determine how well a diamond has been cut. The ideal-scope serves as a useful and simple tool to evaluate a diamond’s light return, light leakage, and contrast. You may use an ideal-scope independently if you are shopping for loose diamonds in person, but the internet buyer can also gain considerable value from ideal-scope images posted online. Many diamond retailers showcase this advanced light performance technology to help the novice consumer understand in…

    12 Apr 2015 | 3:48 am
Resource : thejewelleryeditor.com By Preeta  Agarwal  in New Delhi | With its deep, inky, purplish-blue allure, tanzanite jewellery is trending in India, usurping the long-ruling dynasty of the emerald and the ruby. The Indian consumer has always been attracted to blue gemstones, such as blue sapphires and turquoise, but because of entrenched astrological beliefs that associate the blue sapphire with the more negative effects of planet Saturn, customers are hesitant to buy sapphire jewellery and jewellers tend to keep limited collections. Known as the strongest and the fastest-acting…

  • Know Your Stones: 30 Candy-Colored Gems

    12 Apr 2015 | 3:48 am
Resource : nymag.com By Maura Kutner Walters | For at least half a century, “investing” in a piece of jewelry meant buying a pair of round diamond studs on 47th Street. But these days, it seems like everyone (Gwyneth Paltrow, your ceramist neighbor) is flashing weirder, splashier, more deeply saturated baubles. That these gems look like toys is part of their appeal to a new wave of jewelers — Melissa Joy Manning in Soho, Mociun in Williamsburg, Erica Weiner in Nolita and Boerum Hill — who’ve helped make the industry increasingly less fusty, featuring peach sapphires and Milky Way…

    12 Apr 2015 | 3:48 am
Resource : thejewelleryeditor.com By Rebecca Doulton | When ladies’ watches dance to the music of complications, the effects are magical. They are a grown-up treat comparable to the thrill a child might experience upon opening a music box enclosing a tiny ballerina pirouetting in circles. The Swiss brand Jaquet Droz is a master of automaton: complex, miniaturised mechanical devices that trigger movement on the dial, like the nesting blue birds feeding their chicks in the wonderful Bird Repeater watch. The original Jaquet Droz, whose name was Pierre Jaquet Droz, became famous in the mid…

Opal Butte | Oregon Opal – What is it? | Stability of Oregon Opal | Conclusion Take a look at this stone. What do you see inside it? Probably you are observing a seabed, or maybe it is just someone’s aquarium? Actually, this is nothing but an Opal – a commonly known gemstone, more accurately so-called Oregon Opal, obtained from Opal Butte, located in Oregon. But how the Opal could contain a “piece of the ocean” inside it? It looks like the nature itself has taken an effort to create this unusual gem at the beginning of time. Perhaps, we wouldn’t be able to find…
