I saw with dismay this morning that at 6:00 a.m. it was still dark.  Yes, summer is over, and where did it go so quickly?! Apple didn’t address why it dropped its iconic lowercase “i” but Entreprenuer.com offered a few plausible explanations in this article posted Tuesday. So, it’s Apple Watch then. What does everyone think? My first reaction was that it’s a great-looking watch that I would wear. It is not at all the sleek, futuristic and super-modern device that I pictured but, rather,…

Not to be deterred by the fact that they were basically always either dark blue or green no matter how I was feeling, they were a chosen accessory for me for a  while when I was young. So when I saw an article on Huffington Post titled “This Gemstone Cap, Which Changes Color According To Brain Activity, Is The Mood Ring Of The Future,” naturally I had to click through. (In case the multitude of articles posted online and spread through social media haven’t somehow clued you in, we Millenials love to reminisce about the heyday of our…

If you keep up with magazines or blogs that cover jewelry, you’ve likely seen the headline, or some variation of it, at least once: “These aren’t your grandmother’s pearls.” The article will feature an updated, contemporary take on the pearl strand necklace, or pearl earrings, something that takes the “older,” outdated style and gives it a facelift that is more in line with today’s style and trends. It’s a great idea, not only for designers to play with and reinvent a style or jewelry trend that once was popular, but also for consumers to have a fresh, revived look to…

Monika Knutsson Monika Knutsson has found the perfect way to combine an antique look with a golden, modern touch with her Gilded Lace collection. After getting her start in fashion, she eventually realized she could use the lace she found in other ways. Donna Cluny Gardner
    31 Aug 2014 | 12:10 pm
I saw with dismay this morning that at 6:00 a.m. it was still dark.  Yes, summer is over, and where did it go so quickly?! Fall is almost here and with it will come the new Cluny Grey Fall Collection. Meanwhile, here are a few pieces I've finished lately.Above, a fluorite bracelet with a dichroic focal bead echoing the colors in the green and purple fluorite.  This bracelet is made with some of my favorite faceted fluorite nuggets in beautiful shades including a blue fluorite.Below, a sunstone bracelet with flashing sunstone and a 14 karat gold-filled large-linked textured…

Peridot, the August birthstone, is a pretty gemstone with a clear green color. It is fairly easy usually for us to find translucent peridot that are especially pretty for the jewelry that I make. I do like working with it; the only drawback to peridot is that it is usually difficult to find very large stones.    Peridot has a rich history, full of legends and lore that makes it an especially interesting gemstone. The Egyptians called peridot the "gem of the sun" and believed that it was best mined at night when it shone brightly; during the day, it shone so brightly that it…
  • Coral Bracelets, Necklaces, Earrings: Gifts from the Sea

    13 Jul 2014 | 4:18 pm
I adore coral; it's an organic material straight from the sea with all the magic of the sea. Coral combines well with pearls and other gemstones, and of course, it looks wonderful with artist's lampwork beads. I'm especially fond of peachy-pink colored coral of any kind, and I am bewitched by  branch coral with long twiggy-looking sprigs.Above, a coral bracelet with peachy-pink coral nuggets mixed with irregularly shaped freshwater pearls and sterling silver.  The sea-themed charms include a mermaid, a seahorse, and a fish. Above and below, coral bracelets with slices of…

    29 Jun 2014 | 2:47 pm
I've been busy working on rubies when I haven't been visiting my mother and my best friend in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  I do love working with rubies! Rubies are the July birthstone, of course, and how appropriate since it is the red-hot month of summer. Rubies, like Fourth of July fireworks are compelling; one has to look at them.    Rubies look good on everyone whether your complexion is dark or light, your haircolour brown, red, grey, blonde, or black (yes, rubies look soooo good on redheads!), whether you are big or small-boned, short or tall. Rubies are…

It's almost official SUMMER, and summer is the time for ankle bracelets.  Nothing shows off summer skin like a gemstone ankle bracelet; nothing looks sexier on your legs except bare skin! Very feminine, but slightly edgy, ankle bracelets have long been the summer jewelry of choice.   Above, a sterling silver ankle bracelet made with amazonite and genuine abalone; perfect for your beach vacation! The shell abalone hangs next to the tiny sterling toggle clasp.   Below, a red-hot carnelian ankle bracelet cooled off with just a touch of aqua apatite and a single sterling…

From the minute we stepped through the front doors of the Berkeley City Club last Wednesday, I was in love, transported back to the early 20th century, my favorite era. A time when, from my humble point of view, the arts and architecture were at their apex. Those times were a cauldron of new and old, experimentation, a huge confluence of artists both in the States and in Europe drawing inspiration from history and from each other. The mind reels when thinking of the wealth of the arts in those days: the Ballet Russe, Leon Bakst, Isadora Duncan, Nijinski, Ruth St. Denis, Satie, Debussy,…

September is going to be an exciting month, especially if you are a fan of unique jewellery. There are so many, very talented Scottish designer jewellers working in Scotland but the lime light always seems to be in London. For years London has been home of  Jewellery Week and many of the largest jewellery shows are down there, such as Goldsmiths Fair, IJL (International Jewellery London). Unfortunately there are not any high profile jewellery fairs in Scotland so it’s hard for Scottish jewellers to showcase their work unless they exhibit in London. I have been thinking for years…

  • History and Mystery of Koh-I-Noor Diamond

    Allam Madhav
    2 Sep 2014 | 11:22 pm
Koh-I-Noor diamond is undoubtedly the most famous and oldest diamonds of the world. It has a long story where it got passed from one hand to the other and finally, as on today, it belongs to the British Royal family and is part of the Crown Jewels. Very few people know the fact that when it was discovered, Koh-I-Noor (mountain of light) was mined with its double, Dayra-E-Noor (sea of light). It is interesting to know that this diamond was 793 carats when uncut and was mined in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Its original name is said to be the Samantik Mani. It is believed that this…

It is one of the most beautiful and most popular stone of the gemstone kingdom and is extensively used in the jewelry industry. Its craze is extraordinarily high among the celebs as well and this is the reason why most of the glamorous Hollywood actresses prefer a diamond engagement ring. When they proudly flaunt their rings, their fans are allured by the sparkling…

Organic gemstones have their own beauty and charm. They are a wonderful result of harmony between living and non-living beings. Amber, which was once famously known as the gold of the north is one of the organic beauties that we have cherished for decades. Amber is the fossilized resin of pine trees that went extinct 50 million years back. It has resinous luster with transparent to virtually opaque appearance. The stones’ outer surface is crusty and weathered. But it is warm and silky from the inside and often contains lichens, insects and remains of wood. Amber until the 19th century was…

  • Dinosaur Bone

    15 Sep 2014 | 6:00 am
Dinosaur bone has become widely known quite recently. Generally speaking, dinosaur bone is not entirely a stone, as it was formed from the bones of dinosaurs that petrified and filled with mineral salts through millions of years. In Greek, “dino” means “great, fearful”, and it fully characterizes the mineral. In those days when nothing was known about the evolution of living beings on the Earth, the dinosaur fossils were regarded as nothing more than the stones of unusual shape. And nowadays, when Steven Spielberg showed dinosaurs in their full glory, dinosaur stone became popular.

Compositionally, tsavorite is a grossular, in other words, a variety of garnet. This rare gemstone was first discovered less than half a century ago. Tsavorite got its name from the place of the discovery, namely, from Tsavo National Park in Kenya. The beautiful grossular is only produced in the East African countries like Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar. Tsavorite can be tinted in yellow-green, green and blue-green. Most of the tsavorite specimens have dark coloring, thus the bright green gems are very precious. The green color of the stone is due to the presence of chromium and vanadium in…

    12 Sep 2014 | 10:00 am
White gold is a sought after precious metal for engagement rings, both due to its beauty and because it is a less expensive alternative to platinum. This precious metal is beloved for its gleaming white finish that makes diamonds truly dazzle. Have you ever wondered what white gold is made of? It’s called gold, but why does it look silvery white?     The warm, lustrous yellow hue that most people think of as “gold” is either pure 24 karat gold or an alloy that retains the yellow color of pure gold. (An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements, in this case metals.) Pure 24…

Pearls are unique among gemstones because, of course, they don’t arise from the depths of the earth but from the sea. They require no special cutting or polishing to maximize their lustrous beauty, which has been treasured since ancient times, and ensures that pearl jewelry is always in style.   The History of Pearl Jewelry Pearls were used in jewelry at least as far back as ancient Greece, and until the 20th century pearls were one of the most valued gems, if not the most valuable, in many cultures.      I have 3 of these rubies in zoisite. They have a funny shape. It was not exactly easy to make the settings for them (yes, I am half way there with my pre-made settings!) That ruby does not look red, really... and zoisite does not really look green... The picture is not as good as I thought it was :) Oh, well... If you would like to look at the real colors of the stone, look at a few samples in google (there are…
