As I’m sure you’ve heard, probably multiple times over Pantone named Marsalaa dusky, earthy red color, as its hue of the year for 2015. And while it’s gotten a range of reactions from media, there was a lot of positive feedback coming from the team here, including yours truly. While I have nothing against Radiant Orchid–in fact, I really liked it–or even Emerald before that, I’m happy not only to see a new color move into the limelight, but also for it to be a hue that I think will be incredibly versatile for design and style. • Retail words of the year, part III

    Michelle Graff
    12 Dec 2014 | 7:30 am
I’ll start off this blog with a short confessional but not the scary, priest-behind-the-screen, say-10-Hail-Marys-type from my youth. When I picked my first retail word of the year a couple weeks back, I promised a three-part series but I didn’t have the foggiest idea what Part III would be when I published Part I. This violated a rule I was taught early on in my journalism career, that you don’t run the first article in a series and dub it as such until all the parts are at least near completion. Fortunately for me, the fog lifted when I was interviewing a retailer last week for our…

    2 Dec 2014 | 7:16 am
I am, admittedly, a bit late in coming around to my second word of the year for 2014, as it’s already been done. Oxford Dictionaries crowned locavore (n., a person who’s diet includes as many locally grown or produced foods as possible) as its Word of the Year in 2007. Yet, I don’t think the nationwide obsession with shopping/eating/sourcing local has waned in the seven years since the coronation of locavore. If anything, it’s become more important. Thus “local” is my second choice for a word that has been important to retail in 2014. My first, in case you missed it, was…

When celebrities step out on the red carpet, you can usually count on them (or their stylists) choosing the statement jewelry that will get noticed, opting for major drop earrings and bold colored gemstones to accent their fashions in all the right ways. But lately we’ve been seeing celebrities moving in the other direction when they’ve made public appearances–they are choosing smaller, delicate pieces that create an understated yet pulled-together look. This has been especially true with earrings, with a number of celebs donning studs, small drops or getting trendy with ear…

On Tuesday, Oxford Dictionaries named its 2014 “Word of the Year,” the orderly amassing of letters that, according to the professional wordsmiths at Oxford, has “attracted a great deal of interest during the year to date.” Want to guess what it is? Were you thinking “selfie?” Please, that’s so 2013. Oxford crowned “vape” the word of the year in 2014. Vape can be used as a noun or a verb (but, then again, can’t almost anything these days?) and refers to an e-cigarette device (n.) or the physical act of breathing an e-cigarette’s vapor (v.). Word of the year runners-up…

    26 Nov 2014 | 10:48 pm
Ah, the frenzy of the holiday season begins! And no where is it more frenzied than here on the fourth floor in my studio.  I watched heavy snowflakes today (that unfortunately melted right away) only when I chanced to look up from my busy workbench.  I will be closing shop starting December 13th this year, so be sure to get any custom orders right away!   Above, a multi-gemstone bracelet with sterling silver contains several shades of touraline including pink and green, aquamarine, citrine, apatite, and chrysoprase.  Three sterling silver charms dangle on one side of…

Apatite BraceletI have been spending some time in Hot Springs, Arkansas lately where my best friend and most of my family live. That means that I am woefully behind on so many things and  I am struggling to catch up.  From the Fall Collection, now long overdue to be shown, are these bracelets that look great alone or stacked together on the wrist.  Above is a bracelet with sterling silver, apatite and a single lotus charm; below,  a similar bracelet with gem-quality faceted coin amethysts, sterling silver, and a fleur de lis charm.  The bracelet has a lobster…

  • Cleopatra and the "Gem of the Sun"

    Donna Cluny Gardner
    3 Aug 2014 | 3:29 pm
Peridot, the August birthstone, is a pretty gemstone with a clear green color. It is fairly easy usually for us to find translucent peridot that are especially pretty for the jewelry that I make. I do like working with it; the only drawback to peridot is that it is usually difficult to find very large stones.    Peridot has a rich history, full of legends and lore that makes it an especially interesting gemstone. The Egyptians called peridot the "gem of the sun" and believed that it was best mined at night when it shone brightly; during the day, it shone so brightly that it…

I adore coral; it's an organic material straight from the sea with all the magic of the sea. Coral combines well with pearls and other gemstones, and of course, it looks wonderful with artist's lampwork beads. I'm especially fond of peachy-pink colored coral of any kind, and I am bewitched by  branch coral with long twiggy-looking sprigs.Above, a coral bracelet with peachy-pink coral nuggets mixed with irregularly shaped freshwater pearls and sterling silver.  The sea-themed charms include a mermaid, a seahorse, and a fish. Above and below, coral bracelets with slices of…

You know that I just have to read every book that comes out on bead embroidery, from the most basic to the most advanced.  Except for the very most basic texts, you're almost sure to pick up a tip or two in each new book, and Textured Bead Embroidery by Linda Landy is no exception.  Although much of the material can be found in books you probably already have, I really really like the rather large section that Linda calls the Bead Directory.  In it, she tackles the fun task of showing how many of the new shaped beads can be incorporated into bead embroidery.  It's easy to…

I thought I'd share a knitting pattern that I'm just loving.  Half the fun is buying the two colors of yarn and then the other half is the knitting to see how those two colors complement each other. The cowl pattern is called Embers and for my first one I duplicated the yarn featured by Madelinetosh, because I just loved how that yellow peaked through.  It also was the perfect combination for a special person in my life. After knitting two other cowls in a different pattern I decided to go back to the Embers pattern and create one for myself.  The color in the photo is showing a…

As I start packing for a return to Little River Rug Camp near Mendocino I'm remembering my first Little River retreat last year and how it was a true respite. So, why do I love retreats?Sometimes the location is enough.I am amongst members of one of my tribes.  We all have them and know how comforting and fun it is to be with those that get us.  Maybe they're your fellow Giants' fans, master gardeners, or hiking pals? The myriad ways that colorful wool strips can transform burlap and linen into art wall hangings, rugs, and even totes reaches into that part of me that hums and…

Many of my beading friends like to challenge each other from time to time with interesting items we come across in our travels or shopping trips. This past summer our local Ben Franklin store closed its doors.  I'm real sad to see it go, as it was nice to have local access to art supplies and framing.  Before it closed they had big discounts and the longer you waited the more discounted items became.  Also, of course, the items became more and more obscure.I saw these wooden toy wheels and thought heck, we could make some interesting jewelry with these!  Like the good…

    28 Sep 2014 | 8:56 am
It was as simple as coming across three golden tassels in my stash and seeing these golden daisy lampwork beads by Debbie Sanders.  I'd bought them some time ago apparently, because I couldn't remember who the artist was, and when I was directed towards Debbie by another lampwork artist, she couldn't remember how long ago she'd created them either!   I thought it was cool that another lampwork artist (Donna Millard) knew whose beads they likely were!I really dislike making the same thing twice so I decided to play with patinas to subtly change the color of the tassels. For the gift I…

  • Sticky Story: How We Got The Name Sticky Jewelry

    Kylie Thigpen
    11 Dec 2014 | 7:06 am
So, What’s in a Name? A note from our CEO. Sticky Jewelry opened for business in the fall of 2000. Our first product was an engravable photo pin that could hold a Polaroid i-Zone photo. The Polaroid i-Zone camera had just made its debut, and our intention was to create jewelry and accessories that could hold the small-format photos it produced. The original Polaroid i-Zone film had a peel-off sticky back, so you could ‘stick’ the photo anywhere you wanted. We had considered several names for the company, but ‘Sticky’ was the most popular, so we named the company Sticky…

Black Friday & Cyber Monday: No Pushing, No Waiting, Two Days of Great Savings! For Thanksgiving my family usually gathers at my Grandparents house in Georgia. It’s a beautiful area where they have a house, some acres of woods, and a farm that made the best childhood memories! The house is about a 30 minute drive to the nearest “Piggly Wiggly”, so when I say it’s sort of in the middle of nowhere; I really mean it. Thanksgiving has been super special this way because you feel locked away from the world. It makes me a very happy girl. It puts my younger (more fashionable) sister in…

At this point, most of us have heard about moissanite and other alternatives to natural diamonds. But unlike years ago (remember cubic zirconia anyone?), synthetic diamonds are becoming a viable and respectable alternative for a younger, socially conscious demographic. The public is (finally) responding. This just in from JCK: It’s holiday time—and the media is talking about diamonds. (Yay, says the industry.) And, in contrast to most years, the stories are positive. (Yay again.) Except it’s lab-grown diamonds. (And now the industry gulps.) As promised, Pure Grown Diamonds has…

  • Platinum Price is Going Neck-to-Neck with Rival Metal’s

(American Hard Assets) — Right at this moment, gold price versus platinum price are neck-to-neck. As a matter of fact, gold price is slightly higher by more than a dollar (Pt: $1,195.00; Au: $1,196.58). This seems surprising as many reports have been currently predicting a new gold bear run and a platinum rally. People have also gotten used to platinum price being more expensive than that of gold’s. Platinum and gold prices have met. In an ideal world, platinum and gold can both become standards for physical backing. Next year, a bullion company predicts gold will be going for a bear…

Dec 19 (Investor Place) — Though not as dramatic as 2013′s implosion, barring a miracle within the next couple of weeks, 2014 will be marked as another bearish year for gold. Sure, gold prices got off to a great start in early January, but by April the world’s most-loved commodity began to tumble again. By November, gold had fallen to a multi-year low of $1,141.30 per ounce, and hasn’t made any meaningful bullish progress in the meantime. Could the tide finally turn for gold prices in the coming year, though? Can investors buy gold heading into 2015 with any real hope of making any…

Mr. Dolce and Mr. Gabbana’s challenge was to convey the Spanish influence in a non-conventional and literal way. They achieved this thru the use of very simple shapes matched…
