On Monday, NPR aired a story on why many jewelry stores choose to tuck away their price tags rather than display them. For me, the story highlighted two interesting points. Number one, many consumers remain, for reasons I have a hard time understanding because I know the industry so well, inherently distrustful of jewelers. Two, transparency is imperative in retailing today. For the story, NPR reporter Stacey Vanek Smith visited The Clay Pot in Brooklyn, N.Y. and interviewed store owner Tara Silberberg about why there aren’t price tags on any of the pieces in her store. In continuing with what I think unwittingly might have become another of my beats–weird and interesting jewelry (see: this gemstone cap)–I’ve got another discovery to share with you all. Industrial designer Naomi Kizhner has developed a line of jewelry called “Energy Addicts.” It was part of Kizhner’s graduation project at Jerusalem’s Hadassah College, reflecting what would happen in an energy crisis in the future and a solution that harnesses the human body, particularly the flow of blood through our veins, as a renewable source of energy. I think I should begin this blog with a bit of an apology: We, like so many others, predicted incorrectly. Apple is not calling its first timepiece the “iWatch,” as we wrote many, many times but simply Apple Watch. Apple didn’t address why it dropped its iconic lowercase “i” but Entreprenuer.com offered a few plausible explanations in this article posted Tuesday. So, it’s Apple Watch then. What does everyone think? My first reaction was that it’s a great-looking watch that I would wear. It is not at all the sleek, futuristic and super-modern device that I pictured but, rather,…

Koh-I-Noor diamond is undoubtedly the most famous and oldest diamonds of the world. It has a long story where it got passed from one hand to the other and finally, as on today, it belongs to the British Royal family and is part of the Crown Jewels. Very few people know the fact that when it was discovered, Koh-I-Noor (mountain of light) was mined with its double, Dayra-E-Noor (sea of light). It is interesting to know that this diamond was 793 carats when uncut and was mined in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Its original name is said to be the Samantik Mani. It is believed that this…

Organic gemstones have their own beauty and charm. They are a wonderful result of harmony between living and non-living beings. Amber, which was once famously known as the gold of the north is one of the organic beauties that we have cherished for decades. Amber is the fossilized resin of pine trees that went extinct 50 million years back. It has resinous luster with transparent to virtually opaque appearance. The stones’ outer surface is crusty and weathered. But it is warm and silky from the inside and often contains lichens, insects and remains of wood. Amber until the 19th century was…

    29 Sep 2014 | 6:32 am
Phenacite is a rare mineral which is traditionally used as a gemstone. Its large crystals embedded in mica were first discovered in Russia in the 19th century. Phenacite deposits are located in the United States (Colorado), Madagascar, Norway, Brazil and other regions of the world. The name of the stone derives from the Greek word “phenakos”, which can be translated as “a deceiver”. That’s because the mineral is often confused with quartz, topaz or even tourmaline. Phenacite crystals are commonly colorless, but they can also be white, yellow, pink, light red or even brown. Its…

Hiddenite was named in honor of William Earl Hidden, an American mineralogist. There are other names of the mineral and its varieties, and lithia emerald is one of them. Hiddenite is an emerald-green variety of spodumene, which is a member of pyroxene group; that is why it is sometimes called spodumene-emerald. Compositionally, it is a chain aluminum and lithium silicate. The color of the stone may vary from green to gray, sometimes grayish-brown. It has vitreous lustre. The hardness of hiddenite according to the Mohs scale is 6.5 while its density is 2.6. There are large deposits of the…

    Greg K.

They once lived on top of some of the world’s richest diamond fields. They were evicted. Now they are unemployed and starving.   To be sure, worse has happened in Zimbabwe’s diamond industry. In 2008, the Zimbabwean army seized control of newly discovered diamond fields in the country’s Marange district, gunning down more than 200 diamond diggers. The army then enslaved local adults and children in the diamond fields, keeping the profits.   Since then, conditions in the diamond fields have gotten better. Private companies now handle mining operations. Local residents are no…

Diamonds are precious for many reasons—they are rare, billions of years old, and one of the hardest materials on earth—but they are perhaps most revered for how they interact with light. Light is captivating, inspiring, and undoubtedly beautiful. Light slows down significantly when it passes through a diamond, and once inside, it bounces, bends, and refracts until it can find a way out. Depending on the way light moves within the diamond, it can disperse into every color of the rainbow. It’s no wonder why diamonds were once thought to be shards of fallen stars. If you crave a…

  • Paris Fashion Week Brings Back Hippie Chic

    Loren Wilkes
    30 Sep 2014 | 1:07 pm
Karl Lagerfeld made headlines yesterday with his “Girl Power” influenced Chanel show, where models finished the runway toting feminist picket signs. The show’s theme has perfect timing as Emma Watson gave a great speech last week at the United Nations on gender equality — sparking a viral social campaign tagged #HeForShe. The mix of signs and psychedelic swirls brings back the imagery of the powerful women of the 1960s and 70s, and Lagerfeld wasn’t the only one feeling the hippie chic. Elie Saab and Saint Laurent also worked the rainbow patterns into their…

Then look no further than one of the most beaten-down precious metals, silver. Unlike gold, silver has a wide range of industrial applications with one of the fastest growing being its use in the production of solar cells. In 2013, industrial demand for silver outstripped supply and is expected to do so again in 2014 and 2015. But the thesis for investing in silver is far simpler than attempting to forecast the impact of supply or demand. There is one simple leading…
