Jewelry gawking at the 2011 Emmy Awards tonight was a mixed bag of 'ho-hum' diamond highlights from the usual suspects and a smattering of show-stopping scene stealers!Somebody must have sent the 'wear red' memo around Hollywood, because everyone from Lea Michele in marvelous Marchesa to Kate Winslet in an elegant Ellie Saab number showed up in every shade of scarlet. And while that might make for a boring frock fest (there were no less than seven celebs in red at last count), it does bring with it some sartorial perks. Namely. Rubies.Lea Michele sported some Lorraine Schwartz stunners, and…

I’m posting new jewels inspired by love, (although one could say that all my jewels are inspired by love) in every collection. Inspired by love though they are, they are not, for the most part the usual Valentine fare. There are two new necklaces with hearts–how could I resist–both created from vintage findings, both timeless and classic. Amongst the other jewels, I must say there is much in shades of greens and blues–green chalcedony and fluorite, softly green pearls, French blue pearls, lapis, and turquoise. There is also a marvelous necklace with faceted pyrite,…

India's recent imposition of a 2 percent import duty on polished diamonds seems to be an unfortunate necessity. In this day and age, the normal response would be to see such a move as an imposition on international trade. After all, we've long since learned the lessons of the havoc market protectionism can wreak on an industry or, on a larger scale, an economy. Free trade has proven itself as an effective catalyst that ultimately increases the overall volume of global business and, in the process, benefits all involved. Ingrid Bergman once said that “Happiness lies in good health and a bad memory.” Yesterday, I met a young woman who has as much reason as anybody to wish for a bad memory. But she doesn’t, because she views sharing her story as both a form of therapy and a way to help others. When Grace Freeman was eight months old, civil war forced her family, which included her mother and three siblings, to flee their native Liberia and resettle in a camp in Ghana that was home to some 47,000 refugees.Grace wanted to go to school but it wasn’t free and her family had no money to send her. So they…

Here's a story we just published about Amazon being rated the best company for customer service. Without question. Eons ago, when I was working my way through college in the service industry, management taught us a golden rule: "Kill them with kindness." In other words, treat the customer with such respect and such a high level of service that they can't help but be won over to your side. Easy to say. Harder to do. But any retailer hoping to succeed in the new world order might want to learn from the example being set by Amazon. This is a company that apparently has told its…

That is: a $1 billion-plus brand with stores all over the country, as well as a few now outside the U.S., and a strong online presence. According to Yurman, Senk was selected for his “creative vision” as well as his “exceptional record of success in developing and expanding powerful multi-channel, multi-national…

As any retailer would tell you, it is difficult anymore to predict the ebbs and flows of the economy. This was as evident as ever on Tuesday, when three of the industry’s largest chains reported sales for the all-important months of November and December. News from Tiffany & Co. that “sales weakened markedly in the United States and Europe” over the holiday season surprised me. Tiffany has been one of the strongest performers in the market in recent years, seemingly one of the first jewelry chains to begin showing signs of economic recovery after the global meltdown. Overall,…

    Jewelry Insider
    19 Sep 2011 | 3:46 am

Mozambique, Swaziland, and South Africa - it's been a real treat to go there again - and to wonderful Swaziland with its friendly people and beautiful land for the first time. I will have some pictures later. But now it's time to get back to work!  I'm slow getting back to things - it must be the change of climate, going from 90 something degrees to snow (hurrah!) which is on the ground now. Just two garnet bracelets to celebrate the month of January. Lovely large flat, faceted garnets are in both these sterling silver and garnet bracelets. The top garnet bracelet  with its beaded…

I only have 3 bracelets to show today; I am busy trying to get all my special orders done. But a shipment with these rubies, above, made me decide that I needed a break from the things I was working on. I put together this ruby bracelet with these gorgeous faceted ruby oval nuggets. They are a lovely dark red color - no brown. The artist's lampwork beads are the same colour, but with lashings of real sterling silver winding around each one. I always like aquamarine.  It's a favorite because it looks good on everybody.  I haven't yet met a person who cannot wear aquamarine. This…

It is my favorite time of the year! I love the Thanksgiving holiday. Good food, good wine, and conversation with people we love. What could be better? I have much to be thankful for this year (as I have other years as well). We are all well, happy, I have a wonderful trip to Africa planned; I will see my son, daughter-in-law and grand-daughter and get to spend time with my husband. Work is good, family is good, and life is good. Thanksgiving is a time to remember that daily annoyances mean little; that people mean everything. That the worth of our lives cannot be counted like money. It is in…

The word "busy" does not begin to describe the last few weeks! Here are some of the citrine jewelry pieces I managed to make along the way when I could find quiet stretches of time to work. I am one of those people who has to have hours ahead of me to create - knowing I have a spare hour or two just doesn't work for me. I've been mixing citrine with some of my favorite gemstones (citrine is a personal favorite that I wear often in the form of 2 rings, earrings, and bracelets). Above is a citrine and ruby bracelet with sterling silver. Below is a citrine bracelet with a mixture of artist's…

    18 Oct 2011 | 8:47 pm
October actually has 2 birthstones: opal and tourmaline. Lucky Octobers get to choose from quite a few different colours since opals commonly come in blue, yellow, pink, white, and of course, the fiery opals of Australian origin. If October prefers tourmalines, they too come in many colours, the most common being pink, green, and black. Above is an opal bracelet made with some of the loveliest blue Peruvian opals I've ever had. They are quite translucent and boast a lovely turquoise colour.  For fun, I decided to use some artist's lampwork beads with them; the touch of orange in the…

    Briana Rognlin
    27 Jan 2012 | 7:00 am
I’m starting to see a personal trainer at my gym next week. Let’s call him Tony. Tony says in one month, I’ll be a new Briana. Which made me wonder, what does he have against the current Briana? Is just part of the personal trainer’s sales technique to make women feel bad about themselves? Or do so many women feel bad about themselves that guaranteeing us new versions of ourselves is just the de facto kind of encouragement that personal trainers are supposed to give? To give you some background: I’ve been flirting with the idea of personal training for some time;…
  • Daily Fail: Rachel Weisz’s Arms Don’t Look ‘Too Buff’

    Briana Rognlin
    25 Jan 2012 | 3:59 pm
Rachel Weisz was photographed on set in Manila recently, and naturally The Daily Mail took the opportunity to criticize her body. In their article, “Biceps to rival Madonna! Rachel Weisz reveals guns of steel on the set of The Bourne Legacy,” they suggest that the actress is going overboard with her workouts based on photographs of her in a tank top, then reveal her workouts, which are…not extreme at all. As always, we salute the Mail‘s ability to cut down a lady. Here’s what they had to say about the 41-year-old actress’ bod: No doubt her role in spy…
  • Zooey Deschanel Says Her Healthy Weight Is ‘Weird’ For Hollywood

    Briana Rognlin
    24 Jan 2012 | 1:55 pm
Zooey Deschanel is featured on the latest Allure, so I clicked through her cover shoot gallery online. Between quotes about her bangs and makeup, inevitably, I found the obligatory quote about her diet and weight. And it was surprisingly refreshing. Which, as she points out, is sadly “weird” for Hollywood. The slideshow talked about her looks mostly in terms of her signature style, haircut, and makeup. But she did offer a quick comment on her body: While Deschanel watches her weight by sticking to a diet of vegetables, grains, and proteins, she isn’t obsessed. “Some…
  • Daily Fail: How Does Victoria Beckham Do It? It’s Called Photoshop

Our favorite tabloid, The Daily Mail, has an article today noting that “Victoria Beckham is super slender in her first lingerie shoot since the birth of baby Harper” and asking “How does she do it?” Uh…might I suggest she does it via a little program called Photoshop? I mean, credit where credit is due: Beckham looks great. The 37-year-old just had a baby last July, and I’m sure it took some hard work (and many astrological consultations) to get her body back in pre-baby shape. But  nobody’s arms and legs are this smooth and perfectly contoured. How…

It's been quite a time for us. Jeremy, my beloved 3-year-old Cocker Spaniel, ruptured a disc in his back on Sunday as a result of intervertebral disc disease and his hind legs are now paralyzed. His breed is susceptible to this condition, thanks to selective breeding. He was absolutely fine on Friday. We went down to the beach and he had a grand time running and chasing seagulls. Saturday morning, he wasn't as exuberant as he usually is and didn't act like he felt well. By the afternoon, he was trembling and not himself at all. I took him to the Garden State Veterinarian Hospital and was told…

  • New Jewels in Time for Valentine’s Day!

    kathryne
    27 Jan 2012 | 1:16 pm
I’m posting new jewels inspired by love, (although one could say that all my jewels are inspired by love) in every collection. Inspired by love though they are, they are not, for the most part the usual Valentine fare. There are two new necklaces with hearts–how could I resist–both created from vintage findings, both timeless and classic. Amongst the other jewels, I must say there is much in shades of greens and blues–green chalcedony and fluorite, softly green pearls, French blue pearls, lapis, and turquoise. There is also a marvelous necklace with faceted pyrite,…

If you have not yet seen Maharaja: The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts at the Asian Arts Museum in San Francisco you are missing a breathtaking experience into a fascinating world where mind-blowing opulence was an everyday occurrence. There is an abundance of stunning things–from furniture, clothing (gowns for men, saris for women), artworks and ritual objects–an embroidered velvet throne canopy, and a silver coach so ornate as to defy imagination, jewelry of exquisite workmanship in enamel, pearls, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and huge diamonds. A feast for the…

    kathryne
    17 Jan 2012 | 10:22 am
More on Downton Abbey– I suspect that most readers of this blog, as I am, are Downton Abbey fans. For who could not love this brilliant series by the BBC? One Golden Globe win was not enough in my humble opinion! I was captured from Season 1, Episode  1 and am just as mad for it with the beginning of Season 2– There is much to delve into for those fascinated by all things Downton Abbey. For fashion, I found a fascinating Slide Show at the Washington Post on the fashions of the times and those of today inspired by them – For fiction–I also have a suspicion that many…

    10 Jan 2012 | 9:34 am
You may have read my previous post about me doing a photography class. Well I enjoyed it so much and wanted to keep up the skills that I learned, so did the next course. It’s split into 8 weeks and we had to do projects each week. Week 1 – Fifteen minutes, fifteen strangers. I found this extremely difficult as I am a very shy person to people I don’t know and find it hard to just walk up to folk and start a conversation, never mind taking a photo of them. I wasn’t really happy with most of the images I took for this project, however this is my favourite picture and…

I really enjoy taking on unusual commissions and am interested in doing what I can to help the environment. More people nowadays want to know where materials and stones come from, in particular if they have been sourced in an ethical way. However, it is extremely difficult to trace the origins of what mine the metal came from as there are so many processes and different people involved in the chain of refining the metal to get it to the stage where the jeweller can use it. Sometimes suppliers can’t say where the stones have came from so I was very happy to find a new ethical supplier of…

    Winterson
    24 Jan 2012 | 2:00 am
The fascinating Venus of Hohle Fels is perhaps the oldest sculpture of a human figure found today. It is a six-centimeter tall figurine of a voluptuous woman, dating back to about 35,000 years ago. Carved from mammoth ivory with a delicately carved ring in place of a head, it may also be the oldest known pendant found in Europe. Whilst experts continue to decipher the meaning of the Venus of Hohle Fels, there is no doubt that pendants have become one of the most loved forms of jewellery. Pendants are worn today by both women and men as symbols of identity, religion, love or an elegant fashion…

Valentine’s Day has its origins rooted in Roman and Christian history, but we do not really know its true meaning or history. Perhaps the most enchanting story is that of Saint Valentine, who whilst held in confinement, fell in love with a young lady that legend says was his jailor’s daughter. Before…

    17 Jan 2012 | 5:24 am
Small Round Diamond I consider any diamond that is smaller than 1 carat to be in the category of a small diamond. It is just a name, and not even completely true, as diamond from about 0.75 carat to 0.99 carat are all nice sized diamond and not at all really small diamonds, most people consider 1 carat to be a significant cut-off point, so I categorize anything smaller than that as a “small diamond”. Just for categorization’s sake. That makes today’s recommended diamond a small diamond. Today’s recommended diamond is the best small Round diamond for less than…

The Divorce Ring - $3200 Photo courtesy of theweek.com  Heidi Klum and Seal Photo Heidi Klum and Seal exchange divorce rings? Say it ain't so. Well, I won't.  Allegedly, a divorce is in the works for the two, so when duty calls, I come running to my keyboard, armed with an artillery of useful jewelry info. Now, focus your attention on the above photo; it's a real Divorce ring folks. I wonder what they'll think of next don't you? • Jewelry Designs that Aren't Quite... Celebrity Jewelry Original

Photo Courtesy of VH1 All Jewelry Designs are not all authentic. This is what we already know to be true, but sometimes, sometimes, it's just a blatant disrespect of what's already out there. It's kind of like saying you can buy your ish from your local beauty supply store, or from namethatcelebrity, because I'm on TV, and I'm providing the endorsement. But how many of us as consumers have STUPID labeled across our foreheads? Is it like we should feel flattered if someone comes up to us and says, Hey, you've got on the earrings that so and so has on? Who thinks that I'm not…

  • Purchasing Silver Necklaces for Women

    Jenny
    27 Jan 2012 | 7:05 am
It has been said many times before that silver necklaces are definitely special and always everyone’s favorites. Sterling silver jewelry is long-lasting and attractive, making it an irresistible option. However same like any other jewelry principles, you’re required to be extra careful whenever making purchases. First of all, you may want to inspect the material of the sterling silver necklace. If you want to be ensured that the necklace you’ll be buying is made of sterling, find “925” or “SS” engraved. Next, it’s important to consider the chain. The average length of necklace…
  • Selling Your Old Jewelry

While vintage collections may have an enchanting charm and feel, it is an unavoidable to have that feeling of wanting to sell some of your old collections. Vintage jewelry is vogue, but it is not a sin to always want modern pieces. However you can’t just blatantly sell all your pieces. Especially the ones that aren’t in perfect condition, it could mean the ones that have cuts or carats. Find a way to repair or restore it back, so you will have more guarantees of convinced buyers and reasonable price. You can sell your jewelry online through auctions. Be careful in the process, as you…

Silver Toe Rings have an ability to make your feet look sexier and more attractive. They’re relatively trending because of its versatility. It’s originally worn by Indian women to indicate they’re married and is believed to enhance their beauty. The most popular style must be simple bands. Some of them only have simple craft like tribal design, though there are endless choices of sleek and attractive designs that look so fancy. Silver toe rings are often…
  • Things to Know Before Buying Silver Jewelry

    Jenny
    28 Dec 2011 | 11:01 pm
Like other precious metals, even though silver jewelry isn’t as expensive as gold or diamonds, you need to keep few things in mind before buying silver. Being affordable jewelry doesn’t mean you can just go carelessly snatch everything you’re able to buy. Silver jewelry has “silver”, “sterling silver” or “solid silver” labels. The labeling rule is enforced by Federal Trade Commissions (FTC). Before going to buy a piece, you might want to make sure that the piece you’re getting is genuinely stamped by FTC. In addition to the price of craftsmanship when producing the items,…

Jewelry created by Wendy Newman is a visual feast. As a lapidary and metalsmith Wendy finds many of her own raw stones and cuts them herself to create vibrantly-colored gemstones that she then showcases with exquisite settings. As she describes on her website, “It is always a challenge for me to balance the visual weight of the stone with the complexity of the metal work. It also provides a visual irony between the organic quality of the stone and the industrial quality of the metalwork.“ This lovely pendant features an Australian opal that she highlights…

One of the aspects that we love most about award shows is stalking the red carpet; and stalk we did! We spotted some amazing ensembles, some more bizarre than the others... Though we were definitely pleased with the jewels, gems, and stones on display.  Clearly, cuffs are having a moment. Holly Willoughby looked elegent with her pendant and detailed cuff complimenting her beautiful black dress, whereas Tess Daly looked futeristic with her modern, clean cut choice of dress and jewellery. Our personal favourite way to wear a cuff goes to the latest face of television presenting; Zoe…

There’s not much that we love more than to watch a good old awards show! Award ceremony season is here, and one of the first is the National Television Awards. More of a guilty pleasure than anything, NTA lets us recap on all the Soaps’ drama and the reality shows’ embarrassing moments. However, that doesn’t mean that there’s a lack of glamour; especially when Elle Macpherson is amongst the audience.    Though, the real award goes to biggest makeover of the year: Shona McGarty. Far from Whitney from Eastenders, she looked elegant and understated.

Balmain epitomised the London look, whereas designers like Phillip Lim and Louis Vuitton embraced the colour blocking and colour popping. We think our Tomasz Donocik bracelet below, for £435 compliment's Louis Vuitoon's colour scheme perfectly. However, the show to stick out to us most was definitely the Prada show. Not only were the set designs stunning, the suits suave and the theme…

Jewelry for the New Romantic by Nealay Patel has several surprising beautiful designs.  Nealay hit upon the idea of using beading wire as part of her jewelry design.  His creativity led to this book of designs.  Coated beading wire is no longer a means to an end.  It becomes an integral part of the design itself. First, you see the design on the cover, where gold beading wire forms perfect loops, with gorgeous Pacific Opal bicones that connect 2 loops, forming figure 8s.  But the focal point of this design is what draws the eye. It’s a series of golden wire loops and bead…

Remember those great ceramic turquoise melons I used in a recent necklace with coral?  I took the rest and matched them with the coolest wood beads–Saundra got them too, at a bead show out west!  they are like double pyramids, with rough sides, that look like they were painted and then sanded or somehow gilded with a creamy white color.  I matched them with large pieces of “bone” coral for myself.  I even tried them as earrings, but they are too heavy for ear wires.  I need to get with Saundra and convert them to posts I think. Anyway, back to this piece.  I liked the…

Palladium is one of rare and precious naturally occurring metals with glossy silvery white appearance. It belongs to the platinum group of metals and is a common component of many of the electronic devices. Palladium used to be popular in jewelry making during the Victorian era. However, its popularity eased in the mid 20th century due to the increased popularity of gold in jewelry fashion. Recently, the use of palladium jewelry (wedding rings in particular) has been revived which is attributed to the increasing interest in white jewelry. Asscher Cut Diamond The first Asscher cut diamond was created by Asscher Joseph from Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1902.
