There is ONE place in the world where you can go out, have some fun and… find diamonds. Better yet, as they say on their site – “KEEP WHAT YOU FIND“. The Lucky Find Back in October 2013, Tana Clymer found a 3.85 carat diamond at the Crater of Diamonds state park in Arkansas and named it “God’s Jewel”. The only place in the world (besides maybe Antartica) that one can go exploring nature and… dig for diamonds. We know that consumers are using their mobile devices to shop at levels never seen before. Whether it’s on a tablet or smartphone, they’re using mobile to shop, review peer feedback and opinions on products and services, and get social about their experiences and interactions with brands. With the space growing at such an increasing rate, it’s no longer an added bonus to allow your consumers to buy from you in that space–it’s a necessity. According to IBM’s Digital Analytics Benchmark findings, mobile shopping accounted for nearly 35 percent of all online traffic during the…

I ran a half-marathon Sunday and I did OK, considering the confluence of severe snowstorms and the flu that deterred my training. It was only the second half-marathon I’ve done, and it was my first since I switched from running with an iPod to running with an iPhone. After holding the device in my hand for most of my training, I reached two conclusions: a) I don’t want to carry this thing for 13.1 miles, and; b) I need to quit being cheap and just go ahead spend the $30 to get an armband like I had for my old, trusty iPod before I got caught outside in the rain and the screen went black…

Scotches are lined up next to their corresponding watches at Michael Jordan’s The Steak House NYC in Grand Central Terminal. Each watch was paired with a scotch of the same caliber, collection-wise. While not always relevant, it’s good to at least sift through the alerts to make sure we’re not missing any important news stories, and it can be a great resource for interesting tidbits you wouldn’t otherwise find. Not too long ago, one of my alerts turned me on to a really interesting story about Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde and his project to eliminate smog with a new device he’s creating. Roosegaarde and his team of experts at the Studio Roosegaarde, which has locations in the Netherlands…

I may be two months behind on my gargantuan pile of fashion magazines, but I’m still noticing common threads with regard to trends—not only in the magazines but in stores, fashion editorials, blogs, and so on. My favorite among those trends: athletic style. I love it because it’s so refreshing for styles to be no-fuss. I love wearing sneakers and sweatshirts and baseball caps and, though I’d do it anyway, it’s nice to be “in style” even on a comfortable day. Style gurus suggest mixing racerback...

The term conflict-free, the court felt, connotes a value judgment, and requiring companies to use a term they may not agree with (a “metaphor...

  • Caveat Emptor Revisited: See if Your Idea Has Already Been Done, and Then Do It Differently

    23 Apr 2014 | 12:00 am
When I have an assignment to write an article, I look up what was last written on the topic so I have a foundation to craft something different than has been written before. I wonder if jewelry designers do the same—research on what’s already been done so they don’t make the same thing someone else has already created. Based on my experience interviewing designers and attending shows and market previews of new lines, I am pretty sure that doesn’t always happen. And I’m not the only one who...

So January has come and gone, but now February is here, “Love is in the air.” I had a brilliant holiday in Florida and am definitely missing the nice weather. But I live in Scotland after-all so no complaining! One thing I noticed about Florida is that Valentine’s Day is a major thing over there.  About every two minutes Valentine’s Day was mentioned on the radio. Businesses advertised their special Valentines Day deals and it was only the beginning of January. So I thought I better do something and write a wee Valentine’s post even if it is only 9 days away. Born in Florence, Italy in 1445, little is known of the life of Sandro Botticelli. Perhaps even less is known about one of is most famous paintings ‘La Nascita di Venere, The Birth of Venus’, which is displayed today at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The painting depicts a vision of Venus, the goddess of love, emerging naked from the sea as a fully grown woman standing in a scallop shell on the seashore. This sublime fantasy has been admired throughout the years for its themes of love, beauty and spirituality. One of the mysteries of the painting, commissioned by a wealthy…

    12 Feb 2014 | 2:25 am
Mystery still surrounds the jewels of the Cheapside Hoard. Why were these striking jewels originally buried deep beneath the cellar of a building in London’s Cheapside and what was the purpose of many of the objects that the Hoard contained? The Cheapside Hoard was discovered in 1912, the most significant find of its kind, during the redevelopment of Cheapside, a medieval street between modern day St. Paul’s Cathedral and Bank. This bustling market route was famously described by Charles Dickens Jr. as ”the greatest thoroughfare in the City of London”. The…

Pride of Maderia Echium fastuosumSpring arrived early here in northern California.  Daffodils started blooming in January and our flowering plum did, too.  However, it seemed some plants and the birds and the bees weren't all that confused by the weather and stuck to their annual schedule.  Here are some shots I took over the last couple of weeks that quite pleased me, some in sunshine and others in fog.Bees Doing ItI was really tickled with the chestnut-backed chickadees.   They are not very afraid of me I guess because I've been putting out seed for them every winter for…

After a recent share of my hooked poppy rug on Facebook, I heard a unanimous voice of "Don't even think of letting anyone put their paws on your new rug!"  So although these kinds of wool hooked rugs last a very long time when used as rugs, I will listen to the masses and hang it somewhere in my home.  I do love all the bright colored poppies and will be able to admire it more frequently than if I relegate it to a guest bedroom. You can still find antique hooked rugs in shops, but I do have to agree they are often pretty worn and stained.  I'm sure many of these hookers of yore…

Yeah, I think so.I sure loved wearing mine, but these days I prefer boots I don't have to lace up.  They also are cutest with dresses or skirts anyway and I don't find myself wearing either all that much anymore, at least in the winter.  They remind me of when I worked in an office environment.  Although I loved it when I was doing it I do not miss the alarm clock nor the deciding what to wear. Some of you may have wondered where my posts have been.  Well, my focus has been more on living than writing. This past year I was hit up side of the head, or more accurately my hip,…

Gemstones to jewellers are like sweeties to a child -    once introduced to their beautious delights, collecting them can become quite an obsession and there are not many jewellers I know who don’t have more stones in their box than they know what to do with!                             If your box is full of beautiful, unset stones; if you too have a conscience weighed down by excess carats, or perhaps, less obsessively, you have one stone you would love to set, our advanced stone setting course could be the…

Delighted to see that our students are getting very adept at recording their processes when making work; this week Juliette is our featured Tuesday Maker! Starting with some beautiful shell forms to make moulds, here you can see how Juliette has prepared the sprue and airways in the upper part of the mould. All that scrap silver she has collected has been put to good use here; the next tricky job is to cut away the sprue     After much cutting and filing here is the final, fantastic result. After filing and matt finishing her 3 shell forms, Juliette oxidized the silver to accentuate…

  • Sports-Friendly Medical Alert Bracelets for Children

    Jillian Ponek
    23 Apr 2014 | 12:07 pm
Getting your child to willingly wear a medical alert bracelet can be difficult to start with, but finding one that the child likes and can wear while being active in sports is often even harder. Traditional metal bracelets can pose a problem when your child wants to spend the summer in the pool, or might be banned in some sports leagues. Soft medical alert bracelets made of leather or nylon straps can still feature an engraved stainless steel tag with your child’s necessary health information, but are much more water and sports friendly. The tag won’t rust, and the nylon or leather strap…

Your children’s safety is important, but unfortunately you can’t be around your children 24/7. You might need to leave your children with a childcare provider while you work, or perhaps your older children might be responsible for walking home from school. Your child might even slip away while you’re at the grocery store or park. Although you can’t guarantee you’ll be at your children’s side all day, every day, you can take certain steps to ensure your children’s safety. Safety Tips The first step in ensuring your children’s safety is to educate them on dangerous situations.

    18 Apr 2014 | 12:55 pm
High tech emergency medical ID jewelry has no place in a true emergency, but can be useful once the patient has been stabilized. Today Sticky Jewelry will shed some light on a new emergency medical ID jewelry product that has been created in various forms, that states that your medical information can be found with a “click, scan or call” and accessed “within seconds”. While these statements could be true, the unfortunate reality is that smart phone scans and phone calls simply aren’t used as part of emergency medical responder protocol yet.

It has come to our attention that J. Crew has recently began to sell a lacy wedding jumpsuit. From the website: “Who says you have to wear a gown on your big day? This jumpsuit is a fun alternative to traditional bridal looks, but it’s still feminine and pretty in delicate lace (we sourced it from a family-owned Rhode Island-based mill that’s been making lace since 1859). We love the little details like sheer sleeves and pockets for extras like lipstick or tissues. Plus, it’s finished with bows down the back to tie everything together. Even better? It’s a…

Commissions were a topic I briefly touched on during our previous installment on business practices. Commissions are a complicated topic, though, and for new artisans, they can pose a number of questions. If you are not clear about your commissions and your rules, you can find yourself with some difficulties as far as collecting payments and mailing finished items. That is why it is important to have a set of policies for commissioned works, and to carefully work within the rules you set up.More from the How to Sell Jewelry series:IntroductionWhere to sell your jewelryHow to create an airtight…

So far in our guide to selling jewelry, we have already talked about a number of different aspects of running a jewelry business. We have discussed where you can sell your handcrafted jewelry online and offline and we have also talked about setting up shipping and returns policies which allow you to communicate clearly with your customers and also protect your business. Our third section was on pricing and how to choose wholesale and retail prices for your jewelry which are fair and acceptable to both you and your customers (as well as the broader crafting community). 9 Apr 2014 | 2:28 am
In our previous two installments, we talked about where you can sell your handmade jewelry online and offline, and how to establish shipping and returns policies. One of the tougher aspects of selling jewelry is deciding on how to price your work. It isn’t easy to price jewelry for the simple reason that value is largely a subjective attribute when it comes to art, and jewelry is wearable art. It also doesn’t help that turning to your competitors may not lend you much practical advice at all. Many jewelry artists routinely under-price their own work for the simple reason that they…

If you are planning to sell your jewelry online, you will need to cover your bases legally as far as basic matters like shipping and returns. The shipping policies will not apply if you are selling your jewelry in real life, but you will still want to have some kind of a returns policy in place. Returns policies are even more essential online, since people who purchase your work have no chance to examine your jewelry in person before they buy it. Having these policies in place helps to clarify customer expectations and protect you should a customer have a complaint. If you do not have clear…

Building a more ethical diamond industry is going to take leadership—from people around the world, but especially from within Africa. Indeed, history shows that without good leadership, diamonds can set countries back rather than help them leap forward. Countries with an abundance of diamond wealth—ranging from Angola to Zimbabwe to the Central African Republic—need leaders to build institutions able to ensure that diamond mining is fair and transparent. Leaders are also vital to creating thriving economies in which diamonds are just one of many sources of wealth.   That’s the…

Fingerprints—those swirling indicators of our individual identity—are physical attributes that we tend to take for granted. They serve two physiological purposes: they produce friction (allowing us to pick up items with greater ease) and they amplify vibrations so that we are able to feel subtle textures. This scientific explanation, however, does not hint at a fingerprint’s profound emotional associations. Aside from the occasional handshake, we mostly join hands with those that we love. Holding your partner’s hand makes you feel intimately bonded, while holding the hand of a child…

People are increasingly becoming aware of an unfortunate fact: many diamonds have histories of bloodshed and exploitation. In Africa, civil wars fueled by “blood” or “conflict” diamonds have claimed an estimated 3.7 million lives. Diamond mining is also riddled with troubling labor and environmental practices. Go to some diamond mining areas in Sierra Leone or Angola and you’ll find child labor, ruined landscapes, and diamond diggers earning a dollar a day.   The good news is that the word about blood diamonds is slowly getting out. More and more consumers want diamonds, and…

Byzantine Jewelry History Byzantine Jewelry – The peculiar interest of Byzantine jewelry lies, not only in its own composite nature, but in the great influence it exercised on European ornaments during the greater part of the Middle Ages. Byzantine jewelry is the result of a compromise between Oriental and Western influences. Byzantine jewelry retains the craftsmanship of ancient Rome and the dignity of classical traditions modified by Christian ideas, and to these it unites the skill in patient and exuberant decoration in which the Oriental workman excels. Ancient Roman Jewelry History Ancient Roman Jewelry – The foundation of the designs of ancient Roman jewelry is to be found among the ornaments of the ancient Latin and Etruscan races which Rome subdued. That there is considerable resemblance also between ancient Roman jewelry and ancient Greek jewelry is natural, for the Romans, having plundered first Sicily and Southern Italy, and then Greece itself, induced Greek workmen with more refined instincts than their own to eke out a precarious living as providers of luxurious ornaments. It is worthy of remark that, owing to various causes,…

Ancient Egyptian Jewelry History Ancient Egyptian Jewelry – Most of the forms met with among the jewelry of the civilized nations of later times are found represented in the ornaments of the Egyptians. It is fortunate that important specimens of all descriptions of these have come down to our days. This we owe to the elaborate care which the Egyptians bestowed on the preservation of the dead, and to the strict observance of funeral rites, which induced them to dress and ornament their mummies with a view to future comfort both in the grave and in the after life. The ornaments, however,…
